June Area Survey - Section D Crops and Land Use on Tract

Section D Crops and Land Use This is the most important section of the questionnaire. Section D is used to account for ALL acreage inside the BLUE tract boundary. The acreage, components and usage of every field must be accounted for. Pages of the Interview Manual

IMPORTANT POINTS TO REMEMBER: Section D collects detailed information on ALL ACREAGE inside the BLUE TRACT boundary. FIELD boundaries are drawn off using a RED PENCIL. A Field is a continuous area of land devoted to one crop or land use. Extra time reviewing the photo with the operator prior to completing Section D allows you to accurately account for all the acreage in the tract.

Number each field sequentially on the aerial photo as you complete this section.

Section D: Lines 1-10

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 1: Total Acres Must have an entry for every field drawn on the photo. Enter to the nearest tenth (0.1) of an acre Line 2: Record the Crop or Land Use.

Section D: Field 1 FIELD 1: If the operator lives inside the segment, FIELD 1 = FARMSTEAD (IC 843) Includes: occupied dwelling, lawn, home use garden, buildings and pens around the op s house *This is the ONLY line for farmstead. If the operator lives outside the segment, FIELD 1 = The most accessible field or easiest field to identify on the aerial photo.

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 3: Occupied Farmstead Only complete if operator lives inside the segment. Farmstead acreage is recorded on line 3. This is only available for Field 1.

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 4: Waste Un-Occupied Dwellings Roads Ditches Buildings Exclude: Idle cropland Woodland areas Greater than 5.0 Acres must be drawn off separate! NOTE: Michigan does not need to classify waste ANYMORE!

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 5: Woodland 5.0 or more acres must be drawn off as a separate field. Woodland grazed should be coded as Woodland Pastured by checking the appropriate box in Line 5. You cannot have woods and waste in the same field. IMPORTANT NOTE: Areas of woods or waste taking up less than 5 acres may be included as part of a field.

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 6: Pasture Land normally grazed by livestock. Permanent Pasture Not in regular crop-pasture rotation. Cropland Pasture Cropland to be used only for pasture during the current year. Could be used for crops without additional improvements.

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 8: Idle Cropland Cropland that will not be used for crops during the current year. CRP or WRP is recorded here. Make sure to correctly identify the situation in Line 2 (land use).

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 9: Two Crop Uses Double Cropping: Two crops harvested from the same field during the same crop year. Example: Winter Wheat planted following Soybeans. Record the second Crop in Line 9.

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 9: Two Crop Uses Dual Utilization: Two or more uses of the same field. Not necessarily two crops for harvest. Has a broader definition than Double Cropping. Ex: Rye planted in the fall as a cover crop and plowed down in the spring, followed by corn planting. Record a secondary use of a field in Line 9.

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 9: Two Crop Uses Look out for: Cover crops Abandoned crops YES/NO check box Write description of 2nd crop/2nd use Record acreage of 2nd crop/2nd use

Section D: It's a Fine Line Line 10: Acres to be Planted If planting is not complete at the time of the interview, record the number of acres left to be planted or seeded. Line 11: Acres Irrigated (IN & OH Only)

Section D: Lines 16-51

Section D: Recording Rules The remaining lines are used to record: Acreage planted or to be planted Acreage to be harvest for grain Acreage to be harvest for hay Line 29: Other uses of Grain Planted Plowed Under Cut for Silage Abandoned

Section D: Recording Rules Do not include any land outside the segment boundaries in section D. Each column is for a different field. Each field has a specific* use. Acreage for each field should be entered to the nearest tenth (0.1) of an acre. Woods and waste cannot be in same field. *Some exceptions apply.

Section D - Final Questions TRACT B - TOTAL TRACT ACRES: All Fields are accounted for in Section D.

Section D - Final Questions Questions 55 How many hay acres will be harvested from native or wild grasses or pasture land? Check Section D for Hay acres. IMPORTANT: Check that fields on the photo match fields in Section D.

Section D Tract Acres are VERY important to farm number estimates. If Operator is not available or refuses to report, SECTION D MUST BE completed by observation.

Refusals/Inaccessibles Section D must still be complete by observation Observe tract and field boundaries Observe field usage (corn, waste, pasture,...) Provide field size (acres); use grid rulers as necessary Provide observation (presence/absence) for other parts of the questionnaire.
