Sustainable Nutrition $
Sustainable nutrition - what is it? A simple and helpful concept to describe the overlap between sustainable food production and consumption. It brings together thinking and action on both areas, to focus on and deliver better overall outcomes across the whole food system - both for human health and for the ecosystems that people and food production depend on. A goal to aim for: the result of healthy and nutritious diets made up of sustainably produced foods. A lens for action so that sustainably produced, healthy and nutritious diets for everyone become the norm, not the exception. Sustainable production of healthy, nutritious food Healthy, nutritious diets, sourced, made and disposed of sustainably Sustainable Nutrition 2
Why does it matter? Our global food system is broken, from soil health to public health: our diets are making us ill and damaging our food production capacity and future food security. The pressure is set to increase on both agriculture and public health: current and future challenges impacting on food production and consumption stem from the impacts of food production and consumption. Change is coming from policy, business, civil society and consumers - the world has committed to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and keeping global warming below 1.5 C. The challenges are complex and interrelated, requiring different thinking: we won t meet our future needs by addressing production or consumption separately. This presents risks and opportunities for everyone in the food system: forward-thinking organisations should get ahead of the agenda, seizing the opportunity to lead and shape their sector. Sustainable nutrition is possible: diets that are better for people and for planet largely overlap, and there are promising pathways, interventions and innovations to help us get there. Applying the lens of sustainable nutrition will help you to understand, assess and act on the challenges and opportunities faster and more effectively driving progress within your organisation, across your sector and in the wider food system. 3
What s driving sustainable nutrition? Global trends, shifts and innovations are increasing pressure to: Produce food differently Water and climate change risk & declining natural capital Increasing competition for food, land and resources Global commitment to keeping global warming below 1.5 C Improve what and how we eat Global public health/malnutrition crisis: obesity, diabetes, micronutrient deficiencies 2030 Sustainable Development Goal to end hunger and malnutrition Changing national policies and dietary guidelines Address connections between production, environment, diets, nutrition and health Changing perceptions of food s role in health, from pesticides to human microbiomes Antimicrobial resistance in animals and humans related to antibiotic use in farming Campaigns to eat less meat and innovation in vegetarian food and meat substitutes 4
What s does this mean for my organisation? Whatever your role in the food system, we can help you understand sustainable nutrition challenges, implications and opportunities, and decide how to act. We can help you to understand sustainable nutrition trends and drivers What risks and opportunities are there for your organisation or sector? How will the trends affect your business model, future revenue, costs, effectiveness and licence to operate? How might they affect your suppliers, employees, consumers and beneficiaries? We focus on the right questions and outcomes What would create the biggest shifts towards sustainable nutrition outcomes (eg sustainable, healthy diets) in your markets, supply chains or areas of influence? What problems can your organisation help to solve? What solutions could you help innovate and scale up? How can you make the case for action? How could your organisation collaborate with others to accelerate progress? What might your organisation look like in a world where sustainable nutrition is the norm? How could you get closer to that vision? 5
What does sustainable nutrition leadership look like? Using practical tools such as our Leadership Spectrum and Pioneer Hallmarks, we can help you to assess where you are today, define your level of ambition on sustainable nutrition, and develop a strategy to get you there. Our Scaling Up Impact framework could help you identify how to accelerate positive change beyond your own organisation, through collaborative action with others working in your sector or on shared challenges. Pioneer It is in our interests to make sustainable nutrition the norm Focus Shaping the context & innovating to win: transforming categories, new business models, building markets, improving diets & behaviours Leader Sustainable nutrition is a source of long-term value Focus Opportunities & innovation: raising standards on nutrition and sourcing, shifting brand/product portfolio, addressing whole value chains Performer Sustainable nutrition can be useful to our existing strategy Focus Risk management & cost efficiencies: some certifications, production reformulations, waste reductions Beginner We just want to keep our licence to operate Focus Compliance & philanthropy 6
Sustainable nutrition: Pioneer Hallmarks Future Ready Ready for sustainable nutrition through core business strategy, products & services Competitive Making sustainable nutrition accessible, affordable & commercially viable Creating wider conditions for success Shaping wider context, lobbying & advocating to enable sustainable nutrition Coherent Consistency across the business: no contradictions or product criminals Committed and ambitious about change Recognise the challenges & role of food industry, publically committed to change 7
