1 Flood Related Activities: A large-scale flood was experienced in July 2010 following heavy monsoon rains in Khyber Pakhtun Khwa, Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan regions of Pakistan. The extensive flooding caused approximately one-fifth of Pakistan s total land area to be submerged. According to Pakistani government data, the floods directly affected about 20 million people, mostly by destruction of property, livelihood and infrastructure, with death toll of close to The number of individuals affected by the flood exceeds the combined total of individuals affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the 2010 Haiti earthquake. The extent of losses in Punjab Province assessed by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Punjab is as follows; DAMAGES ASSESSMENT-PUNJAB PROVINCE Damages Population Affected Area damaged Crops destroyed Figures 6.2 million 5.23 million acres 1712 million acres Causalities 110 Schools Damaged 2920 Road Affected 975 of length 3750 km House Damaged 500,000 The devastating flood situation continued for more than 15 days and did not leave any house, village and union council of affected districts without any direct or indirect damage at grass root level. People were forced to leave their homes with little other than the clothes on their back. Makeshift homes were made on road sides, graveyards and any other place that remained dry. Most of the infrastructure in the area was badly destroyed, included roads, bridges, hospitals etc. and no provision of services remained possible to facilitate the affectees.
2 In order to help alleviate the situation of the affected population, PRSP initiated a number of projects in collaboration with different donors including; Government of Punjab, RSPN,USAID, DFID and FAO. Following is the detail: 1) Emergency Relief to Communities Affected by the Floods in Pakistan (Medical Camps) The floods that took place in 2010 had devastating consequences on human life. The affected population was subject to a wide range of epidemics due to the outbreak of infectious diseases. Due to the destruction caused by the floods, people had very limited access to health facilities, and were therefore more vulnerable to disease. A month after the flood ravaged Southern Punjab, the health facilities in most affected areas were not functional and could not handle the increasing number of cases that were being brought to them. PRSP, being one of the major active organizations in the Punjab, was quick to assess the situation and start providing the affected population with essential medical services. With financial support from USAID-Pakistan and RSPN,. The objective of the project was to provide medical services in the flood affected districts of D.G Khan, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Layyah, Rahimyar Khan and Mianwali. PRSP provided medical services to flood affected population through 78 medical relief teams / 814 medical camps. It was started on 6 th of September 2010 and was meant to last for 45 days. However, due to desperate situation, the project was extended for 11 days and ended on 31 st of October, Following is the progress under the medical camps: Number of Patients Treated by Diseases Sr. No. District GI PUO Scabies Patients Treated against Diseases Snake Bite Dog Bite RTI Malaria Others Total Patients Treated 1 Muzaffargarh 8,556 3,589 6, ,569 7,338 28,711 69,935 2 Rahim Yar Khan 3,445 5,284 2, ,279 3,933 14,280 35,483 3 Mianwali ,433 4 DG Khan 2,273 1,364 1, ,393 2,117 9,673 21,145 5 Rajan Pur 1,439 2,108 2, ,913 2,276 13,753 31,624

It was started by PRSP on 6 th of September 2010 for 35 days in collaboration with USAID-Pakistan and RSPN. However, due to dire situation of the affectees, it was extended for 28 days and ended on 7 th of November, During the project, a total of 307,116 animals were treated, either through vaccinations, deworming medication or feed supplements. Due to the importance of livestock to these rural communities, the effects of the flood were made even more visible. It was therefore essential for
