Conservation of Farm Animal Genetic Resources in Switzerland 1. Value of genetic ressources for food and agriculture 2. Value of farm animal genetic resources in Switzerland 3. Status of Swiss native farm animal breeds 4. Development of policy and regulatory framework 5. National Programm on Conservation of Farm Animal Genetic Resources 6. International Cooperation 2
Value of Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture Part of Agrobiodiversity - essential for food and agriculture - have specific functions in agroecosystems Direct use value - food production - niche production of food types - reduce production risk Indirect use value - maintenance of agroecosystem performances (funct. Bd) - potential for future direct or ind. use for breeding/selection - capacity of adaptation to new challenges 3
Heritage value - Part of our cultural heritage to save for the future Non-use value (Existence value) - kept for pure satisfaction Insurance/security to meet future challenges: - climate change - new transboundary diseases - new production systems - new consumer behaviour Indicators are being developped to value genetic resources 4
Value of Farm Animal Genetic Resources for Switzerland Switzerland is a typical grassland, animal production has always been important for the country Animal production accounts for 54% of Swiss total agricultural production. 95% selfsufficiency in dairy and meat products Central element of national history, landscape and cultural heritage Large diversity in farm livestock 100 different breeds : horses, cattle, pigs, goats, chicken, sheep and bees as well as new world camelides. Only 25 of them are native Swiss breeds and most of them are endangered 5
Breeding value Animal breeding is internationaly competitive Animal breeding stands at the beginning of the value chain, Farm animals well adapted to specific environment and market conditions Animal Breeding is focused on ecological production of quality products Animal breeding is in line with the Swiss quality strategy aiming successfull positioning in all markets 6
