1 FORMAT FOR SARE STATE PROGRAM FU DI G YEAR-E D REPORT ortheast SARE State Program Report, Funding Year ovember 1, 2007 September 30, State: Delaware 2. Land-Grant Institution: University of Delaware 3. Report Period: November 1, 2007 to September 30, Project Title: Making Sustainability a Priority 5. Project Contact (SARE State Coordinator): Name: Dave Hansen Address: County Seat Highway Georgetown, Phone: Fax: djhansen@udel.edu 6. Summary The goal of this project was to provide training for individuals from various government agencies, the farming community, and Delaware Cooperative Extension in innovative and sustainable farming practices. Participants were exposed to a number of techniques for sustainable and profitable management of agricultural operations. This project consisted of a number of meetings, workshops and conferences. An associated activity was the hiring of a sustainable agriculture coordinator for the Delmarva Peninsula. The University of Delaware (UD), Delaware State University (DSU), and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) cooperated to fund this position, which is located at DSU, with SARE level 2 funds. Each institution has also pledged a portion of level 1 funds to support this person. 7. Performance Targets At least 12 agricultural educators incorporate techniques and principles from the tours and demonstrations into their programs. At least twenty five interested growers are exposed to additional business models and techniques for making agriculture sustainable in Delaware. Alternative, sustainable farming practices are incorporated into nutrient management continuing education programs. Farmers, politicians, and urban audiences will be exposed to innovative, sustainable organic farming techniques that show positive aspects of agriculture in the Mid-Atlantic Region 8. Milestones As listed in the original proposal, the milestones were: At least 30 individuals attend each tour (Tours were replaced by workshops and meetings). Participants use the principles learned from this program in their work with the agricultural community (Three county agricultural agents and four specialists incorporated information from the meetings and field days into their outreach programs). Two agents from Cooperative Extension and four specialists will use the information from the tours and field demonstrations in their educational materials related to sustainable agriculture (verified). 1
2 Appropriate information from the project will be incorporated into the statewide Nutrient Management Education program which will be seen by at least 150 agricultural producers (verified; more than 250 producers). At least eight individuals from Delaware Cooperative Extension and 20 producers will attend the Delaware Organic Farming Conference and at least four of the Extension individuals will incorporate materials from this conference into their programming (verified). At least 10 individuals will attend the strategic planning workshop from Delaware Cooperative Extension, as well as at least 10 producers and individuals from other state agencies (verified- attended by 23 individuals). Actual milestones/events sponsored and attendance: Date Title Attendance 12/11/07 Emerging pests workshop 23 1/7/08 Delaware Ag Week 1,500 2/4/08 Master irrigator training 55 2/11/08 Diagnosing crop problems 39 2/18/08 Advances in crop breeding 25 3/3/08 Soil fertility and nutrition 60 3/10/08 Enterprising alternatives for farms 60 4/15/08 Extension Ag Nat Resources meeting- Outcome funding I 23 4/26/08 Agri-tourism conference 85 5/3/08 Overhead irrigation 48 9/15/08 Extension Ag Nat Resources meeting- Outcome funding II 25 We also purchased 50 copies of the Mid-Atlantic Berry Guide for use by County Extension offices in their training sessions. 8. Performance Target Verification Performance targets were verified largely by personal communication with the appropriate Extension agent or specialist that conducted the event. Some exceptions were: 1) Attendance by agricultural producers at nutrient management training sessions was verified by the Delaware Nutrient Management Program 2) Attendance by Cooperative Extension at planning workshops was verified by sign-up sheets Attachments: Beneficiary Form Photographs 2
