LSU Entomology: a Legacy of Innovation, Education, and Public Service Tim Schowalter Professor and Head Department of Entomology Louisiana State University Baton Rouge, LA

Leadership in IPM and pesticide resistance management Molecular/genetic biology Insect systematics, taxonomy and biodiversity Urban entomology Forensic entomology Species interactions Human and animal health Pedagogy Recruitment of women

General History First course in insect studies 1886 Department of Horticulture and Entomology 1889 Department of Zoology and Entomology 1893; curriculum in anatomy, household insects, disease vectors, sugarcane insects, apiculture, forest entomology, photography, morphology and taxonomy, insect physiology Department of Zoology, Physiology and Entomology 1949; acarology added Department of Entomology separated and moved from A&S to College of Agriculture 1964 Extension Entomology merged into Department of Entomology 2002

Leadership in IPM and Resistance Management Breeding programs for insect resistance Insect-plant interactions Population ecology of pest species Resistance management research Pesticide effects on predators Effects of pesticide runoff on aquatic systems One of the earliest descriptions of an ecosystem management approach, applied to crop systems (Rudd et al. 1984)

John Roussel and Dan Clower Discovered boll weevil resistance to DDT 1955 Published results 1957 First large-scale resistance in major field crop pest

Documentation of Boll Weevil Diapause Brazzel and Newsom (1959; JEE 52: ) documented timing and location of diapause Diapause became a key component of cotton IPM and boll weevil eradication program Permitted crop residue treatment and targeted control of inactive population

Innovative IPM practices developed in cotton, sugarcane and soybeans during 60s and 70s (Newsom 1975). Elements included: Research focused on population ecology of pest species Breeding for resistant crop varieties Adjusting planting and harvest dates Managing overwintering populations Destruction of crop residues Limited use of selective insecticides at most effective time Attraction small overwintered populations with pheromones Microbial pathogens, e.g., Bt, NPV Assessment of economic thresholds

Red Imported Fire Ant Control Newsom and others raised issue of ineffectiveness of broad application of heptachlor in the 1950s Louisiana Legislature funded an initiative in 2000 for improved area-wide control Innovative neighborhood models for areawide suppression Evaluation of non-target effects Evaluation of biocontrol role

Pioneered indirect interactions among species Clay et al. (1985) first documented protection of grasses from insect herbivores (fall armyworm, as well as mammalian herbivores) by endophytic fungi

Continuing Emphasis on IPM and Resistance Management Research on IPM tactics and resistance management has continued to be a major part of the entomology program at LSU Major projects address varietal resistance biological and cultural control resistance management area-wide management of insects in forests, cotton, sugarcane, soybeans, sweet potatoes, rice, corn, sorghum, wheat and livestock Widespread adoption of Bt cotton, corn, soybeans, e.g., most cotton and 40% of corn are Bt varieties

Molecular/Genetic Biology Molecular basis of FST colony structure, caste regulation and identification of colony membership Molecular studies of fire ant colony structure Molecular basis of resistance to Bt crops Molecular basis for pesticide toxicology and resistance

Strong and Balanced Systematics Program Louisiana State Arthropod Museum houses nearly 1,000,000 specimens Strong legacy in Coleoptera systematics Taxonomic expertise in a variety of insect groups and immature insects Widely used diagnostic service Collaboration on applied projects (e.g., strategic survey of 70+ mosquito species in Louisiana for assessment of WNV vector distribution) Well-supported biodiversity research program, including NSF grant for work on Great Smoky Mts. N.P. All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI)

Leadership in Urban Entomology First published report of Formosan subterranean termite by Spink (1967): extensive FST infestations in NO and Lake Charles,1966 LaFage expanded urban termite control during 1980s. Louisiana Legislature funded special initiative for FST control starting in 2000

Lois Caffey Termite Training Center 2 nd Termite Training Center (after Clemson) Established through efforts of Lois Caffey, a pest management professional, with assistance and support from Former LSU AgCenter Chancellor Rouse Caffey, Former LSU Ag Center Vice Chancellor Jack Bagent, and Former LSU AgCenter Associate Vice Chancellor Dennis Stipe Both Extension and Research faculty provide training

French Quarter Program Initiated 1998 with cooperators from LSU AgCenter (research and extension faculty), USDA/ARS/SRRC, and New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board First major demonstration project in U.S. 16 block in initial program; subsequent expansions to 64 blocks currently 50% reduction in FST alate counts in treated zone compared to untreated area

Leadership in Forensic Entomology During the 1980 s, examining insects that colonize carrion in the context of forensic investigations exploded. The laboratories of Bernard Greenberg (University of Illinois at Chicago), Lamar Meek (Louisiana State University), and M. Lee Goff (University of Hawaii at Manoa) produced entomological studies in a forensic context. From Forensic Entomology: History and Application of Entomology in Forensic Investigations (J.K. Tomberlin, J.R. Wallace and J. Olson)

Leadership in Human and Animal Health First report of behavioral resistance by horn fly in the field to a pyrethroid (Quisenberry et al. 1984, Lockwood et al. 1985) Extension coordination of the state-wide mosquito abatement program for West Nile Virus after it appeared in LA Extension network in all 64 parishes was instrumental in educating the public and training and certifying mosquito control personnel Identification of major vectors and reservoirs, including alligators

Post-hurricane activities Provided early surveillance to mosquito and nuisance fly control program Recommendated quarantine of organic debris for FST containment Identified potential FST role in levee failure Organized pet shelter for evacuated pets Organized fire ant suppression in refuges, bait distribution to returning public Evaluated flood effects on termites and fire ants

Leadership in Pedagogy Innovative instructional techniques Strong service-learning component Student insect collections tailored for community partners, including Extension agents, visitor center directors and secondary school teachers Design and establishment of conservation garden at local school Communication skills Several courses require oral and written communication Incorporation of feedback and revision

Legacy of Recruiting Women Faculty and Students Joan Chapin, systematist, Mary Grodner, pesticide safety education, Sharon Quisenberry, IPM, Dorothy Prowell, molecular evolution, conservation biology, Linda Hooper-Bui, ant management, ecology, Claudia Husseneder, molecular genetics, Natalie Hummel, rice extension entomology, 2007-

Continued Leadership in IPM and pesticide resistance management Molecular/genetic biology Insect systematics, taxonomy and biodiversity Urban entomology Forensic entomology Species interactions Human and animal health Pedagogy Recruitment of women
