1 Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) otherwise known as Farm Science Centre or Ka jaka ai jinghikai ia ka rep ka riang bad ri jingri bathymmai is a noble concept developed by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) which was rest upon a solid base of transfer of technology from laboratory to farmer s field with respect to Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandary, Floriculture,Bee keeping, Mushroom Cultivation, Broiler Farming and allied subjects. ICAR emphasized on the Research on Agriculture and allied subject during 1960 s to generate new technology for increasing crop production in different Agroclimatic zones of the country. A lot of technologies were generated through constant effort of the scientists to boost up the production. But the technologies so generated in the research field are not transferred through extension agencies of different state Government. It is observed that a lot of technologies could not reach the farmer due to high cost of adoption and lack of interest of extension agencies. Hence the transfer of technology was not complete and effective. As per the recommendations of Mohan Singh Meheta Committee during 1974 K.V.K.s were established in different states for easy and active participation of farmers through Front Line Demonstration (FLD) and On Farm Trial (OFT).Gradually working guidelines are prepared to make all K.V.K.s as the light house for the rural people. MANDATE AND OBJECTIVES OF KVK Following are the Revised Mandate of KVK: 1-Conducting On Farm Testing for identifying technologies in terms of location specific sustainable land use system. II- Organise training to update the extension personnel with emerging advances in agricultural research on regular basis. III-Organise short and long term vocational training courses in agriculture and allied vocations for the farmers and rural youths with emphasis on learning by doing for higher production on farms and generating self employment. IV-Organised Front Line Demonstrations on various crops to generate production data and feedback information. To achieve the above mentioned Mandates there are six objectives to follow for all activities to be under taken by the KVK. and they are
2 i)to demonstrate the new improved Technology to the farmers as well as to the extension agencies directly in the farmers field with their active participation and verify these technologies by Assessment and Refinement to make them fit for the Local environments. ii)to identify the important problems of that area as per the need of the farmer and priorization of the identified problems as per their importance. iii)to collect feed back from the farmers and extension agencies and to communicate these message to research scientists for modification of technology. iv)to impart training on different topics to different group of villagers. v)to provide new and important information to the extension agencies and NGOs for wider circulation in that locality to improve their economic condition. vi)to prepare different extension models and verify these models in the farmers field with their participation to create confidence among them. Therefore KVK Provides solution to any problems related to agriculture and allied subjects as and when faced by farmers of that particular locality. Interested farmers/persons can even get proper advices regarding the establishment of new entrepreneurship on non traditional sector if they wanted to. FROM THE PROGRAMME COORDINATOR S DESK KVK West Khasi Hills of Meghalaya is located at the Dorbar Hall of Hima Mawiang Syiemship (presently), Nongshillong, 24 KMs to Nongstoin on Shillong-Nongstoin National Highway-44 Roadside. This KVK started functioning with the assumption of charge of the Programme Coordinator I/C No.AGRI ( CH ) 9/2005/298, dt on the specific terms of reference-to plan, impart and oversee the functioning of the KVK,to monitor the fund released for it, to ensure co-ordination with Farmers Training Centre/Institute, to accelerate its operation as per norms and to supervise the office establishment but the ground activities commenced with the appointment of the Subject Matter Specialists and Farm Managers in February. This Newsletter is intended to reflect the works being undertaken as per KVK Mandates for the benefit of farmers, rural youth and extension workers of the district. Problems identified through awareness programmes, trainings and visit of the Scientists to the field formed the core action point to synthesize the ultimate stakeholders the activities of the KVK. This KVK has been able to convene the first meeting of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) in which suggestions were given by the SAC members.

The friendly attitude, approachable and wholehearted support from time to time by Dr.A.K Gogoi, Zonal Project Director, Zone-III encourages all of us to work entirely for the fulfilling the Mandates and Objectives and mostly for the benefit of the farming community. ZPD with the Scintists and staffs of KVK West Khasi Hills ACTIVITIES OF THE KVK This KVK is just about to complete one year and twelve villages were selected in two different C&RD Blocks. In order to fulfill the Mandates of the KVK various activities such as OFTs and FLDs were taken in these selected villages and Trainings were organized in these villages as well as in the Centre for the benefits of the farmers and the rural youth. ON FARM TRIALS (OFT) SMSs of the Centre made a field visit and diagnosed the disease and pest problem of Ginger, therefore an On Farm Trials were conducted on Soft Rot of Ginger and Management of stem and shoot borer of Ginger at three villages viz. Mawkyrdang, Wahrit and Mawkynrang under Mairang C&RD Block. Farmers in these villages never used any fungicides or pesticides before in management of diseases and pests of Ginger therefore chemical fungicides, pesticides as well as botanicals were used to manage Soft Rot and stem / shoot borer of Ginger. These will replicate in the other selected villages. Another OFT was done on the Assessment the Yield of Cauliflower of Organically grown at Nongshillong,Umjei and Mawroh of Mawthadraishan C&RD Block as the SMSs through
6 the training conducted On Campus came to know that this village have never tried to grow Cauliflower before. Cabbage cultivation in this village was good where as the damage done by different pests particularly by Diamondback moth (DBM) was severe, therefore an OFT on IPM on Cabbage Cultivation was also conducted in these villages. OFTs on Performance and Popularization of Pea cultivation were also conducted at Nongshillong, Umkrem and Pariong under Mawthadraishan C&RD Block. In these same villages, another trial was conducted for Introduction of suitable HYV cabbage for getting higher yield. ON FARM TRIALS (OFT) FRONT LINE DEMONSTRATION The yield of Paddy in the selected villages was low due to infestation of different Insects and pests. Front Line Demonstration was done at Nongshillong under Mawthadraishan C&RD Block on Integrated Pest Management on Paddy. Another demonstration was conducted on Cabbage + Pea Inter cropping at Dong Bir,Mawsawa and Donggate under Mairang C&RD Block. These Demonstrations would be followed in the other selected villages
