1 High Tunnel Trellised Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) Variety Trial: 2014 Tomatoes are extremely popular at farmers markets and local grocery stores all along the Front Range. The increasing demand for high quality locally grown produce has growers looking for ways to extend the growing season and protect their valuable crops from the changing climate conditions. Tomatoes produce high yields and mature relatively quickly but are not frost tolerant which makes it extremely difficult to extend the growing season. Introduction Unheated high tunnel production is quickly gaining popularity on the Front Range of Northern Colorado as it has shown to be a cost effective way to extend the growing season. Cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes and lettuce greens are the most noteworthy high tunnel crops. Tomatoes are particularly well adapted to culture within a high tunnel since tomatoes can be trained to grow vertically by trellising or staking. Early season tomatoes also reward growers with premium prices. Additionally, trellising tomatoes as a cultural practice also increases total yields, the probability of producing high quality fruit and reduces the likelihood of disease by increasing air flow between plants and keeping leaves dry. Growers are looking for the appropriate varieties to choose for the high tunnel environment. High yielding quality fruit producing varieties that are bred for trellising and higher temperatures are the qualities growers are looking when making varietal choices. Objective Compare the performance of two tomato types Marmande and Coeur de Boeuf under high Tunnel cultivation. Methodology During the 2014 growing season, two tomato types: Marmande and Coeur de Boeuf with three and two entries respectively were trialed in the center 3 rows. Each tomato type had one cultivar used as a check to compare the breeding entries to. The types were bred by Vitalis Organic. The entries were trialed in an unheated high tunnel for the purpose of testing their performance. The unheated high tunnel was located at the Colorado State University Horticulture Research Field and was equipped with insect screen siding, drip irrigation, and landscape fabric. The seedbed walk ways were sowed with cover crops that were mowed regularly. The tomatoes were trellised vertically with #2100 polyethylene twine line with ¾ vine clips. The experimental design was RCBD, 3 blocks (reps), 5 entries, 15 plants/entry. Seeds were sowed 22 April 2014 and then planted 28 May Data was collected three times throughout the growing season to determine plant characteristics and fruit quality (yield, weight, uniformity, marketability and number culled). Additionally an appearance and taste tests were conducted at a CSU Field Day presentation to determine consumer preference.

Total Number of Culled Tomatoes Marmande type had higher yield and almost twice the marketable number and weight of fruits than Coeuf de Boeuf; both had nearly similar numbers culled. The culls were mostly due to cracks, cat face, blossom-end rot, and insect damage.
4 Conclusion The CSU Field day taste test revealed that consumers preferred the appearance of three of the Marmande entries and one of Coeur de boeuf and were more likely to buy these. The unheated high tunnels proved to be effective protection from hail, high winds, and significant fluctuations in temperatures. More research is recommended to confirm the validity of these findings under the changing climatic conditions.
