1 Farmed Fish & Shellfish Sourcing transparency 2017
2 Atlantic Halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus Norway Near Stavanger Halibut is a high value marine flatfish that is farmed in small volumes by a handful of farms in Norway. The fish take at least five years to reach market size. Southern We source black tiger shrimp from two family owned small-scale shrimp farms in southern. Our processing partner in uses these shrimp and other high quality ese ingredients to hand-make a range of Asian-themed foods for M&S. Soc Trang We source extensively grown black tiger shrimp from southern. This means they are grown without aquafeed in large ponds located near the sea. The shrimp feed on naturally occurring feed such as algae. This is a very traditional, low input, low impact farming system in which communities tend to own and manage the ponds. Our supplier buys shrimp from the communities and then processes them to our standards. Cà Mau Organic We source extensively grown black tiger shrimp from southern. Madagascar North and northwest Madagascar 37% Organic certified, 63% GLOBALG.A.P. Madagascan black tigers are top tier farmed shrimp. And they are scarce. We source from the only two farms operating in Madagascar, one of which produces organic shrimp. Blue Mussels Mytilus edulis West Coast and Shetland Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Friend of the Sea Mussels and other farmed bivalve shellfish are among the most sustainable aquaculture products because they don't require aquafeed and have a low environmental impact. We source through a long established cooperative composed mostly of family-owned mussel farm members in Shetland and the west coast of. Some non-members also supply us. All cooperative members are Friend of the Sea certified and Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified. Honduras Gulf of Fonseca Our Honduran farm is a semi-intensive operation that M&S has been working with for over 25 years. Our supplier has high standards of animal welfare and employee conditions of service, and it has low environmental impact. It is also involved in a wide range of community projects. Indonesia Sumatra We source from a large vertically integrated shrimp farming business in Sumatra. Here the company supplies shrimp larvae and aquafeed from its own hatchery and feed plant, provides ponds and other farming infrastructure, oversees the farming operations and it processes all the shrimp. But the small and multiple shrimp farms within the estate-type operation are operated by private farmers working for themselves.
3 Belize Placencia We source shrimp from a handful of small and medium scale privately owned intensive and semiintensive farms in Belize. Nga Trang This is a family-owned intensive shrimp farming business mainly based near Nga Trang on s south-eastern coast. Lochmuir TM - Atlantic Salmon West Coast, Orkney and Shetland GLOBALG.A.P. and RSPCA Assured We have partnered with a leading Scottish salmon farmer to produce Lochmuir salmon, which is exclusive to M&S. Lochmuir is distinct from other farmed salmon by virtue of its specially formulated high quality diet, lower stocking densities and a range of other husbandry measures set out in our Assurance (Atlantic Salmon). Organic Atlantic Salmon Orkney and Shetland Organic Organic Atlantic salmon are only produced by a handful of farms. They differ from conventionally farmed salmon mainly in the areas of reduced stocking density and organic aquafeed. We source from one UK and one Norwegian producer. Organic Atlantic Salmon Norway Central Norway Organic Organic Atlantic salmon are only produced by a handful of farms. They differ from conventionally farmed salmon mainly in the areas of reduced stocking density and organic aquafeed. We source from one UK and one Norwegian producer. Pangasius Pangasius hypophthalmus Mekong Delta Pangasius is a fish native to the Mekong River in. It is one of the most sustainable fish species in aquaculture. It produces a white fillet that has a mild flavour. We sometimes use it as a source of good quality whitefish in prepared foods. Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus mykiss Loch Etive, Loch Awe, Loch Earn GLOBALG.A.P. and RSPCA Assured Rainbow trout are native to the Pacific west coast of America but they have been farmed across Europe and globally for more than a century. We source from a privately-owned farm that has both seawater and freshwater production sites in. Seabass Dicentrarchus labrax Turkey Aegean Sea GLOBALG.A.P. 5 Farming Method List Floating net pen farming Description Cage or net pen farming refers to a method of aquaculture used for finfish. Large cages are suspended in Lochs and offshore and inshore areas. They are attached to floats on the surface which keep them suspended and weights which anchor the cages to the seabed. Freshwater pond farming Fish are reared in ponds under carefully controlled conditions operating to specific standards for management of farms and farming practice. Feed is very strictly controlled from a single source. Fish are harvested from the ponds using nets. Hand dived This is a traditional method of harvesting molluscs such as scallops and clams, in which a diver collects the target species by hand. Hand tools may be used to gather molluscs, such as tongs or rakes. Lantern net grown Lanterns are a type of mesh cage suspended from lines which are floated by buoys. This is a very low-impact farming method and can be used for cultivating scallops. The scallops are placed in the lanterns and suspended in the water column. Feed is not required because scallops are filter feeders, which means they filter particles of food from the water column. Seawater pond farming Seawater tank farming Suspended rope grown Our warm water prawns are cultivated in large ponds situated in coastal regions of Indonesia, Honduras, Madagascar, Belize and. The pond is a controlled environment where water quality and feed inputs are carefully monitored to ensure the optimum conditions. When the prawns are ready to harvest, the water is drained from the pond and the prawns are captured using nets. Tank farming systems can be used for finfish or shellfish. Within these closed systems water can be obtained and treated in either one of two ways: 1. Pumped from a nearby water source such as a river or the sea, filtered, used in the system, filtered and treated to remove any waste or contaminants and then pumped back or 2. As above but where the water is not pumped back to the source but remains in the system using re-circulation technology. Mussels, which feed on plankton and organic particles in the surrounding water, are grown on ropes suspended from floats on the surface of sea Lochs and offshore and inshore areas. The mussels use their byssus threads to attach themselves to the ropes. Once they have reached their optimum size, the ropes are hauled on board a vessel, and the mussels are removed from the ropes. Rope grown systems do little to disturb the ecosystem and they can even improve water quality because molluscs work as filters. M&S Assurance Development M&S Assurance for species. M&S Assurance in for species. This category refers to where the species has been farmed at a location which has been assured or certified to a recognised standard by an independent third party. For example, Council (ASC) certified, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified, GLOBALG.A.P. assured, Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certified, Friend of the Sea certified or RSPCA Assured. Not all products containing certified seafood are labelled. This category refers to the species has been farmed at a location which has not been assured or certified to a recognised standard by an independent third party. M&S & WWF Sustainable Seafood Charter: As part of M&S Plan A and WWF s Seafood Charter, M&S and WWF have been working together since 2010 to promote and ensure responsible sourcing of sustainable seafood at M&S. WWF assesses and advises M&S on the environmental sustainability of its seafood. Together we identify and develop projects for M&S wild and farmed fish to assist fisheries and farms to meet the highest seafood environmental standards. Disclaimer: Species and farm sourcing information disclosed covers the period 1 April 2016 to 31 March We will review and update the information within this disclosure as appropriate on an annual basis. Situations may arise during the year where we may need to deviate from what is presented within this disclosure (e.g. a change to the availability of certain species) or we may decide to introduce new species into our offer. We have strict protocols to manage this eventuality and all species are sourced in accordance with our standards. Find out more about our approach to sourcing fish and shellfish
