15 Polish pig sector * Have been facing a drastic drop down in number of pigs and number of sows since 2007 * Is not competitive on the common market * Polish authorities regard any modern and commercial type of pig farming as an industrial type it is very difficult to get a permission to expand or build new pig facilities * ASF cases in wild boars and pigs in Poland have been found since the beginning of 2014 * Russian ban on export of pigs and pork meat * Pig castration and stricter welfare regulation

16 SWAT analysis of Polish pig sector S 1. Great potential in pork production resources without threat for environment. 2. Large internal demand for pork. 3. Favourable geographical situation. 4. Modern machinery in slaughterhouses/meat plants. W 1. Defragmentation of ownership in breeding, production and slaughter sectors. 2. Existing law unfavourable for further concentration of pig production. 3. Relatively expensive capital comparing to other EU countries. 4. Lack of mechanisms protecting from prices fluctuation. 5. Disapprovement and burocracy in all segments of O 1. Existing sties/piggeries ready to put animals in. 2. Predicted increase in pork consumption worldwide. 3. European funds for development of agriculture and rural areas together with structural funds. 4. Creating instruments for financial support of vertical integration. 5. Possibilities to use simple reserves. 6. Use the potential of workforce. 7. Development of high quality meat and meat products market. 8. Running Aujeszky disease monitoring and elimination program. 9. Adjustment of law regulation to pork branch needs. 10. Potential in diplomatic services to develop exports. 1. Problems in feed sector. 2. Growing disapprovement of media and public opinion about modern pig production. 3. Retailers nets dictatorship and their reluctance to cooperate with domestic producers. 4. Longlasting procedures whenf implementing new regulations. 5. Unequal area payments within EU. 6. Speculation on grain market. 7. Fragmentation of delivery chain (high number of middlemen). T
