2 New York Youth DAIRY DISCOVERY WORKSHOP March 25-26, 2016 ELIGIBILITY: Due to the hands on approach of the sessions, participation is limited to the first 60 youth to enroll. Youth who are 14 to 19 years of age as of January 1, 2016 with an interest in dairy cattle are eligible to attend. OVERVIEW: Milk quality and milk production represents the most critical enterprise of dairy production management. The tighter margins of today and the consumer concern about food quality make milk producers more aware than ever of the importance of milk quality. Better milk means quality dairy products and more money. Dairy producer s today are in the business of making food. The producer s definition of quality milk is the level of quality, which provides the greatest value for your milk and provides the highest quality product for the consumer. The environment, nutrition, cow comfort, milking equipment and milking procedures all affect milk quality and milk production. Milk quality has several defining factors: Somatic cell counts Bacteria counts Drug residue Milk components And all are affected by or influence the level of mastitis in the herd. Production, profit, and quality can directly result from managing the milking enterprise. For this reason DAIRY DISCOVERY will be focusing the year s workshop on Milk Quality and Milk Production. Youth will understand, observe, and participate in technical skill training related to such topics as: A. Quality milk by definition 1) SCC 2) Bacteria 3) Milk Components 4) Understanding levels of infection B. Managing Pathogens-Where do you start 1) Cultures 2) Clinical / Subclinical infections 3) Dry-off 4) Herd health and the environment C. Biology and dissection of the Mammary gland

3 1) Milk production in the mammary gland and the effects of mastitis on mammary tissue and production. 2) Dry cow treatment procedures D. Steps to take for better milk and more production 1) Evaluate milk quality and udder health 2) Take a look at milking procedures and milking efficiency E. Science fun with dairy foods F. What s new in milk quality and looks 1) New ideas and new looks REGISTRATION: The deadline for registration is Thursday, March 17, 2016 or before if registration limit of 60 youth is reached. The cost of the workshop will be $45 per Youth. This fee includes activities, materials, dinner Friday night and lunch Saturday. Registration forms should be signed by a Cooperative Extension Educator, FFA Advisor or Club Leader. Cost for Adults accompanying youth is $10 and they will also need to complete the registration form on-line. LODGING: 15 rooms have been blocked at the Ramada Inn, 2310 Triphammer Rd, Ithaca, for the night of March 25, Rate is $99.95 per room. Ask for room block Dairy Discovery when you call the hotel and tell them you re with a Cornell function. To get the rooms tax exempt, 4-H participants need to work with your County Cooperative Extension Educator for a tax exempt form will be necessary.
