Prior training of field workers and supervisors In Maharashtra, by seed company personnel. Pilots in 2010, with hybrid tomato seed. Production under simple net house, with surface irrigation; Processes handled with care, successfully; Incidence on unknown diseases partly damaged crop; Production fell short of target but quality was good Produce accepted by company and full price paid to grower. Indications of commercial production spreading progressively among growers. * Program facilitated by Syngenta Foundation India; carried out by Shamayita Math, in Partnership with local smallholder farmers.

Highest income Rs. 81,588/-from one unit, equivalent to to Rs lakh per ha. Estimated income does not take into account Initial investment on net house and drip irrigation system. Companies paid 30% advance against contact value. 20 Conclusions According to growers Hybrid tomato seed production most profitable of all existing farming operations. In , pilots initiated on hybrid okra and others. Potential also exists for hot pepper, egg plant and cucurbits; Protected structures may be necessary for some. Studies should be carried out in other western districts Purulia, West Midnapur and Birbhum. Companies should invest in SPR in West Bengal. Advantages Good climate, labour availability, lack of competition with boro. West Bengal can emerge as next major centre for hybrid vegetable seed production.
