Introduction The presence of satellites has brought significant change in our lives and they are contributing in every aspect of life. In majority of the developing countries the access to Space Technology is still very low due to high cost of the Space missions. In this direction the use of Small Satellites especially the Micro and Nano Satellite can significantly contribute towards the development of these countries and help in accessing facilities like- 1- Education 2- Disaster Monitoring 3- Exploration of Resources 4- Agriculture Support 2

Micro/Nano Satellite Programs in the Developing Countries India Iran Indonesia China South Africa Vietnam JUGNU NAVED LAPAN TUBSAT COMPANION SUNSAT F-1 CUBESAT SRMSAT RASED NUOXING 1 STUDSAT 3

Importance of Micro/Nano Satellites in the Developing Countries Restricted access to Space technology in the developing countries has been a big draw back in not getting services at cheap and efficient way. Lack of adequate financial resources in majority of the developing countries is believed to be the major reason behind the unavailability of their own satellite system. Unavailability of potential space program in majority of the developing countries doesn t allow them to take initiative of putting big satellites into Space. Huge Population and Wide Area Spread of large Developing Countries like India, China and Brazil creates hurdle in accessing the amenities in these countries with the help of big satellite in each and every corner. Amazon Forest Region in Brazil which is believed to be the home of rich natural resources like MINERALS & MEDICINES can be explored with the help of Micro/Nano Satellites. 4

Small developing Countries Enormous Need of Space Applications Lack of Potential Space Program & High Cost Input in Putting Big Satellites Use of Micro/Nano Satellites Fulfill the needs of Society in Such Countries Very Low Cost Reduce Dependence on others 5

Huge Population & Large Area Large Developing Countries (India, China and Brazil) Strong Space Program Difficult to Access every nook and Corner with Big Satellites Micro/Nano Satellites can help to access each and every corner Easy to Develop and launch Micro/Nano Satellites 6

Smart Applications of Micro/Nano Satellites in the Developing Countries India Agriculture Support, Education, Disaster Monitoring Brazil Agriculture Exploration of Natural Resources, South East Asia (Indonesia, Thailand ) Disaster Monitoring Middles East Asia (Iran, Iraq) Monitoring Disaster 7

Agriculture Support Agriculture products are the main source of economy of the majority of the developing countries in Asia and Africa like India, China, Thailand, Srilanka, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Mali. There is prime need of providing facilities to the farmers in order to help them to produce enough quantity of agriculture products. In terms of a large developing country like India where approximately 60 percent of the total population lives in rural areas of the country. Agriculture is predominant occupation, accounting for 52 percent of the employment 8

It s believed that the agriculture production has declined considerably in the last two decades due to various factors like change in rainfall pattern, unavailability of modern equipments. Lack of knowledge about the fertile land, rainfall information and water distribution are the primary reasons in not achieving enough production. The vast area spread of the country is also a big problem in not helping the farmers in each and every nook and corner of the country considering the requirement of huge workforce and monetary resources. The use of Micro/Nano Satellites can play a vital role in this way in providing cheap and smart solutions to the farmers by deploying them over those regions where the agriculture production is rich or situated in remote locations. 9

Use of Micro/Nano Satellite for Agriculture Support in Uttar Pradesh State of India Uttar Pradesh is the second largest Indian state by economy, with a GDP of (US$ billion). It is the fifth largest Indian state in terms of Area with a total area spread of 243,290 km 2 (93,333 Square Miles) Agriculture is one of the largest part of the state's economy along side Industries. Lack of relevant information about the climatic conditions, rainfall patterns, availability of fertile land has resulted into decrease in Agriculture production. Agriculture Production can be increased effectively by implementing Space Applications. Use of Micro/Nano satellites with the help of constellation of Three satellite constellation system can be deployed for agriculture support in Uttar Pradesh. 10

The System can be designed in this manner that there are three satellites are active over the respective zones of the state by dividing them in three zones. It can be classified into three zones namely Eastern (Zone 3), Central (Zone 2) and Western (Zone 1). Three satellites in each of these regions can be deployed for providing support to the farmers in the respective zones. 11

Education Support In developing countries like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka millions of children are not able to get good education due to lack of proper educational facilities. The condition is severe in Villages where there aren t good schools. If there are schools then children in most of the cases don t get opportunities either due to unavailability of skilled teachers or due to financial constraints. This is where space applications can play an important role in helping out such children to get education. Accessing Education Support with the help of Big Satellites is not affordable for developing countries due to financial constraints. The Micro/Nano Satellites can be very effective in this direction by using them specifically for the purpose of education particularly in Villages and remote areas. 12

Disaster Monitoring Rapid industrialization around the world has created several problems which are harming the environment subsequently leading towards Global Warming. According to a report published Asian countries are more venerable to natural disasters. Those regions which are highly prone to natural tragedies like Tsunami, Earthquake and Landslide can be easily monitored with the help of advanced space applications like Indian Ocean region in South East Asia. Since Accessing with big satellites can be costly for developing countries. Micro/Nano Satellites can be very effective in this way to provide disaster monitoring over any region An Integrated Small Satellite System consisting a constellation of 7-8 Micro/Nano Satellites can be deployed over any region which is prone to natural disasters for round the clock monitoring. 13

Disaster Monitoring over Indian Ocean using Integrated Small Satellite System Ground Station Ground Station 14

Exploration of Natural Resources In large developing countries like India, China and Brazil where it s believed that these countries possesses rich natural resources but are not able to explored in every nook and corner due to the large area spread and remote locations in these countries. The applications of Micro/Nano Satellites can be implemented to explore every possible regions in these countries for those hidden natural resources. The exploration of the natural resources in this way can significantly contribute to the people living in those regions by helping them to getter opportunities to make use of the resources. Like the exploration of Gold in any region can help in setting Gold mining plants in that region which will provide job opportunities to the people living in that locality. 15

Conclusion The growing use of Space technology in today s time can t be ruled out, especially in the developing countries. There is a great need of implementing the broader applications of the Space technology in developing nations in order to help them to achieve sustainable growth. The growing population and the depleting resources are the primary reason behind the poor nature of development process in such countries. Low Cost and ease in developing Micro/Nano Satellites can be very effective for developing countries to afford them. The use of Micro/Nano Satellites can provide several cost effective solutions to the economy of such countries helping them to achieve desired goals and contribute towards a balanced use of resources and conserving the environment. 16
