Coyotes caused the majority of sheep and lamb losses to predators. They accounted for 60.7 percent of the total. Coyotes were also the largest predator of goats in the three major states (AZ,, and ) accounting for 35.6 percent of predator death losses. The value of goats lost from all predators was $3.4 million. Use of non-lethal predator controls is also highlighted in this publication. Farmers and ranchers throughout the United States spent $8.8 million on non-lethal methods to prevent predator loss of sheep and lambs. Another $.0 million was spent on non-lethal predator controls for goats and kids. This report is released as a cooperative effort between the National Agricultural Statistics Service and Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service - Wildlife Services and National Animal Health Monitoring System. 10 Reliability of and Goat Predator Loss Estimates Survey Procedures: A random sample of U.S. producers was surveyed to provide data for these estimates. Survey procedures ensured that all sheep producers, regardless of size, had a chance to be included in the survey. Large producers were sampled more heavily than small operations. About 3, operators were contacted during the first half of January by mail, telephone and faceto-face personal interview. Estimation Procedures: Total death losses from all causes for sheep and lambs were as reported in "Meat Animals, Production, Disposition, and Income - 0" (released April 7, 0). In setting the predator loss estimates, first total predator losses were estimated as a percent of total losses, then specific predator losses were estimated as a percent of total predator losses. Revision Policy: Revisions to previous estimates are made to improve the current estimate. Previous year estimates are subject to revision when current estimates are made. Estimates for losses from all causes are subject to revision in next year s "Meat Animals, Production, Disposition, and Income". No revision to predator losses is planned. May 0 0 NASS, DA
