2.0 Feed the Future targets and achievements Indicator Target Result % # of hectares under improved technologies or management practices as a result of USG assistance # of individuals who have received USG supported short-term agricultural sector productivity or food security training ha ha
# of public-private partnerships formed as a result of FTF assistance # of private enterprises (for profit), that applied new technologies or management practices as a result of USG assistance: Number of MSMEs, including farmers, receiving business development services from USG assisted sources Still underway Still underway
3.0 Reasons for under or over achievements On seed production, first year production was poor due to drought as well logistics to import seed. Lack of start-up early generation seed resulted in not implement most activities in the first year. Delayed office establishment and staff recruitment process
4.0 Challenges and constraints Seed importation rules required too much protocol yet it was mostly breeder seed that was produced in collaboration with ZARI Msekera Disbursement of funds to ZARI collaborators at times delayed Few partners showed interest to participate in basic and certified seed production Lack of information sharing as to who is producing what! Certified seed on the market is still expensive for an average farmer Seed recycling
5.0 Future direction Funding needs to be timely to allow for timely activity implementation ZARI needs to have a section that should specifically handle seed production of early generation seeds. Seed road maps need to be linked to effective demand rather than potential area of production for legume crops.
6.0 Lessons learned Good partnerships are a pre-requisite for greater achievements Semi-formal seed system could still play a big role in strengthening the legume seed system. Small demonstration plots are not as effective as large plots
Project implementing partners Our local partners Seed Control and certification Institute (SCCI) Good Nature Agro Ltd. Other seed companies NGOs and CBOs Ministry of Agriculture through DACO s office Farmer Clubs/ Associations and Cooperatives
