3 WELCOME TO THE 3nd ANNUAL DIAMOND PEAK CATTLE CO BULL SALE IN LA JUNTA, COLORADO John Raftopoulos, DVM 351 School St. #1 Craig, CO (Cell) George Raftopoulos (Cell) Angelo Raftopoulos (Cell) Welcome to the Third Annual Diamond Peak Cattle Company La Junta Bull Sale! First and foremost, I would like to thank last year s buyers and welcome any and all to this year s sale. We are honored to be offering a great selection of big, stout two-year old bulls to buyers in Southern Colorado and the surrounding area. These bulls were born and raised in the high desert environment of Northwest Colorado, range much like that of Southern Colorado. They know how to travel and work the rough country. They are bred to be moderate in size, but thick and deep-bodied. Easy calving with feed lot performance, and carcass quality bred through careful selection of A.I. and natural herd sires and ridged culling. Bulls were all PAP tested by Dr. Tim Holt and are all Trich tested using the PCR Method, which has proven to be the most reliable and accurate trichomoniasis test available. All bulls can go anywhere in the United States. They are all fertility tested and fully guaranteed through the first breeding season. You will also notice that SimAngus and Diamond bulls have been genetically (DNA) tested. All SimAngus and Diamond bulls have the Igenity scores for 15 traits and all of the registered Angus have genetically enhanced EPDs. Science tells us that these scores are more reliable due to the fact that all environmental differences from herd to herd have been removed and the true genetic potential of the animal can be determined. In 2017, Diamond Peak Cattle Co. (DPCC) bid on thousands of calves sired by DPCC bulls. We were able to purchase many of them and they are performing very, very well in the feedlot. Other feeders are also taking note of the superior performance of DPCC sired calves, and they are bringing premiums in the market place. You will also notice that many of the bulls are full and half-brothers. Consistence and uniformity are two of the fundamentals of our breeding program. We use only a few well-proven sires that will work in our environment and also produce high quality steers and very functional females. Thanks again for attending. I hope to see you at the sale. 4 The power of genetic testing. The Angus Gold and the Igenity Gold genetic test analyzes and evaluates 15 traits based on each bull s genetic makeup. These results are scored against a database of both purebred and commercial Angus (Angus Gold) and SimAngus (Igenity Gold) cattle. The resulting score allows us to ensure the accuracy of the bull s birth weight and calving ease due to the fact all our Queens of Diamond cows are calved on open range and the calves are not individually weighed. This score is also a buying aid to you, to give you the opportunity to evaluate the genetic potential for the traits that are important to you. We have provided eight of the fifteen most important traits for your evaluation on each DIAMOND Angus Bull offered in this sale. In addition, we have also created a custom DPCC Index. The DPCC Index puts selection pressure on several traits simultaneously without you having to review each individual trait score. The DPCC Index is a composite of: Calving Ease Direct - 20% emphasis Calving Ease Maternal - 10% emphasis Weaning Weight - 25% emphasis Residual Average Daily Gain - 25% emphasis Heifer Pregnancy - 10% emphasis Marbling - 10% emphasis We are excited to embrace the advancement of genetic testing to provide you an additional resource to make your bull selection. One of the top Angus Gold herds tested in the nation to date. The Diamond Peak bulls exceeded the average of all animals that have been tested with the Igenity Angus Gold profile in 12 of 15 traits. That is truly remarkable and very difficult to achieve. It speaks volumes about the Diamond Peak breeding program and their 2018 sale bulls. 5 How to use 1 to 10 genetics scores. The Angus Gold and Igenity Gold scores range from 1 to 10. They are not meant to indicate what is best, but rather predict relative differences among animals. Higher scores are not necessarily better it just means that the animal has the potential for more of that trait. Select scores that best fit what you need to improve your operation. The best scores will likely differ for each trait and be determined by your current level of production and what traits you need to improve. Trait and DPCC Index Definitions Calving Ease Direct (CED) An indicator of the probability that a calf will be born unassisted out of a first-calf heifer. Genetic factors such as birth weight and shape of the calf are included in Calving Ease Direct. Higher scores suggest greater calving ease when mated to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight (BW) Variation in calf weight at birth that a bull will transmit to progeny. Higher scores equate to more birth weight. Weaning Weight (WW) A predictor of gain from birth to weaning. Higher scores indicate faster pre-weaning growth. Milk A predictor of a bull s genetics for milk production that will be expressed in his daughters. This is not a prediction of actual pounds of milk produced. Higher scores equate to greater milk production. Mature Weight (MW) A predictor of cow weight at maturity. Higher scores indicate that a bull s daughters will weigh more at maturity. Average Daily Gain (ADG) An indicator of an animal s genetic potential for post-weaning growth. A higher score equates to more rapid growth after weaning. Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) This measure of feed efficiency is a predictor of genetic potential for post-weaning gain given a constant amount of feed consumed. Higher scores for Residual Average Daily Gain indicate greater feed efficiency. Marbling (MARB) Marbling is an indicator of degree of fat within the ribeye muscle at the 12th rib. Higher marbling scores equate to a higher probability that a bull s progeny will grade USDA Choice or better. DPCC Index An index helps you put selection pressure on several traits simultaneously. The DPCC index is a combination of six traits with emphasis on maternal performance and growth. The traits in the index and emphasis for each trait are: Calving Ease Direct 20%; Calving Ease Maternal 10%; Weaning Weight 25%; Residual ADG 25%; Heifer Pregnancy 10%; Marbling 10%. The higher the index, the more a bull excels in a combination of traits important to herd productivity.
