3 NZMP Non-GMO Project Verification At a glance NZMP ingredients that are used for Non-GMO Project Verified products are certified under the Non-GMO Project Standard. Proof Points New Zealand New Zealand has stringent biosecurity regulations, and is well-recognised for its regulatory control of GMOs. No genetically modified plants or animals (including cows) have been released in New Zealand, and no genetically modified antibiotics, vaccines, or growth hormones are used on cows here. New Zealand regulations do not prohibit the release but no releases have currently been approved following the application process through the New Zealand HSNO Act. New Zealand is one of the only dairying countries in the world which has not approved release of genetically modified crops. Grass-fed - Fonterra s New Zealand cows, which supply NZMP, are grass-fed. - They consume on average 85% of their diet as grass, and spend at least 90% of their time on pasture. - New Zealand pasture is mostly made up of white clover and perennial rye grass, but we also include New Zealand grown grass silage, hay, and forage crops in our definition of pasture/grass-fed. - Our milk production follows the natural pattern of pasture growth in New Zealand. The Non-GMO Project - The Non GMO Project is a non-profit organisation committed to preserving and building sources of non-gmo products, educating consumers, and providing verified non-gmo choices. - The Standard assesses ingredients, inputs, and activities. - Our variety of our products meet the Non-GMO Project Standard requirements as verified by Where Food Comes From, Inc., an approved Technical Administrator for the Non-GMO Project. - More information about the Non-GMO Project is available at

4 Non-GMO Project requirements - The Standard requires compliance with ingredients, additives, and inputs; and that they do not contain, are not derived from, and are not produced with the help of GMOs. 1 - The Non-GMO Project also has required limits on feed which may come from genetically modified sources (less than 5%). - Our New Zealand farmers may use some low levels of imported supplementary feed, for example, during times of the year when grass growth is slow, to ensure cows receive adequate nutrition. The use of any potentially genetically modified imported feed is monitored to make sure it meets Non-GMO Project requirements. - These supplementary feeds make up less than 2% of the total ration that our cows in New Zealand consume on average. - Our Non-GMO Project Verification is independently verified and confirmed by Where Food Comes From, Inc. Our ingredients cannot be claimed as GMO free. Unfortunately, GMO free and similar claims are not legally or scientifically defensible due to the risk of contamination to seeds, crops, ingredients, and products being too high to reliably claim that a product is GMO free. The Non-GMO Project s claim offers a true statement acknowledging the reality of contamination risk, but assuring the shopper that the product in question is in compliance with the Non-GMO Project s rigorous standard. While the Non-GMO Project s verification seal is not a GMO free claim, it is trustworthy, defensible, transparent, and North America s only independent verification for products made according to best practices for GMO avoidance. Only this specific Non-GMO Project Verified ingredient range can be claimed as Non-GMO Project Verified. 1 Approved exceptions under the Non- GMO Project Standard are allowable refer to Non- GMO Project Standard for further detail.

5 Leveraging the Non-GMO Project Verification Why it s important Consumers want to know where their food comes from. 40% of consumers are willing to pay a premium for dairy or dairy based products with a non- GMO claim 1. Non-GMO Project Verified is the fastest growing label in the natural products industry, representing $19.2 billion in annual sales. 2 It is also among the most trusted non-gmo labels among consumers 3. A widely recognised non-gmo product claim is a powerful offering for you to make to your consumers. That s why we offer a range of Non-GMO Project Verified NZMP dairy ingredients. About the Non-GMO Project The Non-GMO Project enables the verification of NZMP s milk products against the Non- GMO Project Standard by an approved and accredited third-party. In this, our verification was conducted by Where Food Comes From, Inc. The Non-GMO Project is a non-profit organisation committed to preserving and building sources of non-gmo products, educating consumers, and providing verified non-gmo choices. 6 Our credentials New Zealand is well-recognised for its regulatory control of GMOs. - No genetically modified plants, or animals (including cows) have been released in New Zealand, and no genetically modified antibiotics, vaccines, or growth hormones are used on cows here. - New Zealand regulations do not prohibit the release, but no releases have currently been approved following the application process through the New Zealand HSNO Act. - New Zealand is one of the only dairying countries in the world which has not approved the release of genetically modified crops. Only milk provided by New Zealand grass-fed cows is manufactured into our Non-GMO Project verified NZMP dairy ingredients. - For this Non-GMO Project range there is a dedicated collection of selected farms to ensure that the verification can be applied to a specific product line. The use of supplementary feed is monitored to make sure it meets Non-GMO Project limits on feed which may come from genetically modified sources (less than 5%). - While NZ feed is predominantly pasture based and not genetically modified; some supplementary feed imported into New Zealand may be classified for GM risk, and their use is monitored through reporting and verification systems. - These feeds which could be from GM crops make up only 2% of the average total ration that our cows in New Zealand consume. A variety of our products meet the Non-GMO Project requirements, and NZMP is able to offer Non-GMO Project Verified milk at significant scale.
