3 Vision for a more successful Scotland The purpose of the Scottish Government is to create a more successful country, with opportunities for all of Scotland to flourish, through increasing sustainable economic growth

4 Scotland s first national food and drink policy promotes Scotland sustainable economic growth by ensuring the focus of all food and drink-related activity by Government offers quality, health and wellbeing and sustainability, whilst recognising the need for access to affordable food for all.

7 A healthier Scotland will result;- from changing individual behaviour and attitudes about diet and food choices; from improving the nutritional quality, safety and freshness of food on offer in institutions and the catering sector; by supporting Scottish food manufacturers and retailers to take the initiative in driving forward customer demand for more affordable, healthier food options. Communities across Scotland will enjoy better access to affordable, safe, healthy and fresh seasonal food.

8 A wealthier and fairer Scotland will result from Sustainable economic growth of the Food industry Greater co-operation and collaboration from primary production to final market Ensuring the long-term viability of primary producers Increasing export markets for Scottish produce Food processing alone accounts for one in five Scottish manufacturing jobs and more than a quarter of manufacturing exports.

9 A safer and stronger Scotland will result from A thriving food industry, Where local communities flourish, Becoming better places to live through improved access to amenities and services Recognising the interdependencies between communities and their links to food production Local food supporting local access and connectivity between producers and consumers

10 A greener Scotland will result from Reducing the environmental impact of food and drink production, processing, manufacturing and consumption; Encouraging responsible behaviour throughout the supply chain; Reducing emissions, unnecessary use of raw materials, waste packaging, energy and water use. Consumers throwing away less food and using fewer plastic bags Processors and manufacturers making the best use of available science to reduce waste, packaging and improve energy efficiency

11 A smarter Scotland will result from A highly skilled and innovative food industry Consumers that are better informed about where their food comes from How it was grown, and the wider health, environmental, social and economic benefits of the choices they make.
