Why choose Alfalfa? Alfalfa is the forage plant par excellence, the most widespread in Italy and throughout the world. It is an irreplaceable friend of nature, essential for biodiversity and enriching the soil with minerals. Italy has a high propensity to Alfalfa cultivation: in this area, due to the favourable weather conditions and soil composition, Alfalfa can be cultivated without the use of chemical fertilizers or pesticides or waterbed irrigation. An alfalfa-based diet is essential for the growth of healthy and long-lived animals and guarantees high quality milk, meat and egg production. Thanks to its nutritional properties and high quality protein and fibre contents, in addition to provitamins, beta-carotene and minerals, alfalfa is recommended in all stages of animal growth. 1

The benefits of dehydration Dehydration is an artificial drying process which, due to natural energy sources, eliminates water in fresh forage, keeping its nutritional properties unaltered and facilitating its preservation. Dehydrated alfalfa is the forage that has a composition most similar to the growing plant in terms of vitamins, organic acids and oligo-elements. Product consistency and homogeneity are guaranteed for the entire year. Dehydration excludes the formation of mould and bacteria, making forage safer from the microbiology standpoint and offering undeniable advantages for animal health and husbandry production safety. 2

100% ITALIAN FORAGE since 1960 Dehydration allows for improved product pressing and packaging, simplifying storage and handling and facilitating use in all breeding conditions. 3

From seed to stable... Forage quality depends on a series of factors such as the selected plant variety, weather conditions, soil properties and cultivation methods, growth stage harvest, cutting date, harvest and drying techniques and end product storage method. 1) Sowing Phase. Only Gruppo Carli selected and produced seeds are sown in Italian fields without the use of chemical fertilizers. Pesticides and waterbed irrigation are not used during plant growth. 2) Harvesting phase. The most advanced technologies are used for harvesting: the new forage harvesters, thanks to an innovative raking system, gently sweep product into windrows, preserving and keeping it clean even during the hottest hours of the day. The harvest time is carefully evaluated: the best time to obtain the best protein and fibre content is the early growth stage. 6

3) Processing: Gruppo Carli products can be sun-dried or dehydrated. In the dehydration process, cut alfalfa is placed in the oven where, by hot air flows generated by natural energy source combustion, most of the water in the fresh forage is eliminated, preserving the original nutritional properties and facilitating storage. After dehydration, the product (with 10-15% residual humidity) is pressed and tied in rectangle or small bales or compressed into pellets or wafers. 4) Storage and packaging. End product packaging and storage systems in ventilated warehouses guarantee bales and pellets storage without using synthetic products. 5) Quality control. To guarantee constant product quality and freshness, raw materials and end products are tested daily and the entire production process follows a strict traceability procedure. External certification boards such as Suolo e Salute, Cermet and SGS further guarantee product quality through periodic crop, production and stock inspections. 7

100% italian forage since 1960 Gruppo Carli is a family-run business that has been farming, processing and selling quality forage since With 200 employees and 4000 farms, more than 20,000 people are involved with the Group. Gruppo Carli products are grown on over 15,000 hectares in Emilia Romagna, Marche and Lazio regions. The surface area of the fields can be represented by a 4-metre wide strip surrounding the globe like the equator. The Group is increasingly focusing on organic farming, from forage to cereals for animal feed and human consumption: only natural gas, biomass of plant origin and photovoltaic energy of its own, are used in production processes and dehydration, with no harmful air emissions. To strengthen its strong bond with nature, the Gruppo Carli has created environmental oases in especially suited areas to promote the local flora and fauna. 8 Gruppo Carli products are known and appreciated throughout the world: industry experience, business sense and innovative technologies have lead to significant domestic and international market expansion. Core markets are Europe and non-eu markets like the Middle East, North Africa and the Far East. Use Gruppo Carli products to share in the farmers passion for their work.
