Agriculture Importance and Trends

Livestock Importance Animals have been used by humans for thousands of years and are a significant aspect in human survival even today

Livestock Importance The two must common ways humans use animals are through: Livestock Products Products that come directly from the animal that require little to no processing Livestock By-Products Products that come directly from the animal but require a significant amount of processing to reach the final product

Livestock Products Food Livestock and poultry provide humans with fresh meat, milk, cheese and eggs daily These products help provide humans with the essential nutrients required for the proper growth and development of the body

Livestock Products Clothing Wool and leather from hides can be made directly into clothing for humans to wear Although using raw wool and leather isn t as common in the U.S., it still is a common practice in other parts of the world

Livestock Products Shelter The raw leather hides can also be used for shelter, again not as common in the U.S. but is still used in other parts of the world Power Many underdeveloped countries still rely of animals as their method of power to complete work

Livestock Products Recreation In the U.S. many livestock animals are used for recreational purposes such as rodeos and horseback riding Manure In many underdeveloped countries dried manure is used as a source of fuel for cooking and heating homes In the U.S. manure can be used as raw materials for methane gas biodigesters producing fuel

Livestock By-Products Wool and Leather Raw wool and leather can be processed into refined products that are sold by retail stores Candy and Chewing Gum Animal fat is used in the process of making candies, tree gums are also popular

Livestock By-Products Gelatin Horns, hooves, bones and hides are all processed and refined to produce gelatin.

Livestock By-Products Glue, Cosmetics, Waxes, Soap, Lubricants, Brushes etc. Countless products come from the by-products of livestock, most products we consume today have some element of animal by-products in them.

Livestock By-Products Animal Feed Many animal feeds today are made with animal by-products (scrap meat, bones and blood meal).

Livestock By-Products Insulin Used to treat diabetics and produced by the pancreas of livestock; today insulin is primarily produced through biotechnology Heparin Used for blood clots and produced by the lungs of livestock; many heart attack victims are treated with Heparin

Livestock By-Products Medicine Many medications and treatments of diseases come from livestock byproducts Fertilizer A processed version of the original raw manure; often containing added ingredients to improve quality

Livestock Products and By-Products Livestock and poultry will consume materials that humans will not eat and convert those materials into products and by-products that humans will consume. Meat, Eggs, Milk, Etc.
