4 2 Introduction - What means ILIAS? ILIAS is a powerful Open Source Learning Management System for developing and realising web-based e-learning. The software was developed to reduce the costs of using new media in education and further training and to ensure the maximum level of customer influence in the implementation of the software. ILIAS is published under the General Public Licence and free of charge. Mag. 5 3 Main Views within ILIAS Personal Desktop Every user in ILIAS has his or her own Personal Desktop. It collects all resources, that are needed by the learning to fulfill the daily learning tasks. The personal desktop features News, Personal Messages, Learning Resources, Personal Notes, Bookmarks, External Web Feeds and other information. The learner can re-arrange these blocks of information according to his needs. Mag. 6 3 Main Views within ILIAS Repository In the repository users find all available resources for learning and working like ILIAS learning moduls, digital books,or SCORM mudules, learning objects, courses, discussions forums, files or working groups. Different modes of presentation (flat view, tree view, filter view) and an internal search engine support user additionally to find the appropriate content easily. For further use all these content objects can be put on the user s personal desktop by subscription until cancelled. Mag. 7 3 Main Views within ILIAS Search The Search functionality offers the facility to aimedly browse any objects available to you on the installation according to title, description and keywords. Mail ILIAS features an internal Mail system that will be available to you within the system after you have registered. You can choose wheter to forward these mails to your privat-/university-account or not Mag. In the other folders you ll find all lecture material and also exercises and their solutions. Furthermore there is a forum where you can discuss among themselves about functional themes or ask the others if you don t understand something also beyond the lecture. Mag.
