1 Time: 1 hour Empty Bowl Project Materials Needed: Porcelain, china or glazed earthenware Paint that is specifically designed to use on glass surfaces and dishwasher safe. Peblo is a thermo-hardening, transparent, non-toxic, water-based paint. With the bowl project, students can take part in an activity that encourages global learning through art. Students will paint and design their own individual bowls to serve as a reminder of the many bowls that go unfilled at mealtimes around the world. Each student will be responsible for decorating their own bowl, which will later be auctioned off. This transaction will symbolize the act of giving a plate of food to one of our beneficiaries. The activity will be supplemented by an educational worksheet that goes over malnutrition and food insecurity around the world. The Sharing Experiment highlights an experiment conducted by ACF-Madrid, to study human behavior when faced with the injustice of hunger. Of the 20 children who participated in the study, all 20 shared their food. In a world that produces more than enough food to feed everyone, there should be no reason why 3.5 million children still die from hunger every year. By watching this video and taking part in the bowl project, students will learn the importance of sharing resources.

2 1. BACKGROUND Global hunger now afflicts more than a billion people worldwide. Severe acute malnutrition, however, is the more immediate killer: it threatens the lives of 19 million children. Every year, at least 3.5 million children die from malnutrition-related causes. From rural mountain villages to refugee camps to ethnically divided cities, Action Against Hunger treats and prevents malnutrition in over 40 countries around the world. Our programs are launched most often during times of crises, and focus on the most vulnerable populations, including children and pregnant women. 2. WHAT IS HUNGER? WHAT IS MALNUTRITION? The dictionary defines hunger as: 1. A compelling need or desire for food 2. The painful sensation or state of weakness, caused by the need of food. 3. A shortage of food; famine. The dictionary defines malnutrition as: 1. Lack of proper nutrition; inadequate or unbalanced nutrition 2. Lack of adequate nutrition resulting from insufficient food or unbalanced diet When a person is not getting enough food or the right sort of food, malnutrition is right around the corner. Even if people get enough to eat, they will become malnourished if the food they eat does not provide the proper vitamins and minerals to meet daily nutritional requirement.

3 3. WHY DO WE NEED FOOD? Food is our body s fuel! It gives us energy to do things like move, think, walk, grow, breathe, and learn. When we don t get enough food, we are hungry and can become malnourished. Hunger impacts our attitude, energy, ability to grow, and ability to learn. 4. WHO ARE THE HUNGRY? Most of the world s hungry live in developing countries. According to the most recent statistics, there are 870 million hungry people in the world, and 98% of them are in developing countries. Three-quarters of all hungry people live in rural areas, mainly in the villages of Asia and Africa. These populations are dependent on agriculture for their food, and often have no alternative source of income or employment. As a result, they are constantly vulnerable to crisis. 5. WHAT CAUSES HUNGER? There is more than enough food to feed the entire global population of 7 billion people and still, one out of every eight people is going hungry. Why does hunger exist? Nature Natural disasters, such as floods, earthquakes, and droughts, leave a dramatic impact on food production. Although a natural disaster may strike quickly, its longterm damage can be unimaginable. In many developing countries, farmers and families depend on one small plot of land. If this land is destroyed by a natural disaster, their source of food and livelihood is washed away. War and Conflict Many regions of the world where there is great conflict, there is also evidence of hunger. It is easy to imagine how difficult it is for a community plagued by violence and insecurity to sustain and support stable food systems. In many cases, a family whose life has been interrupted by war and conflict will see a drop in income and

4 access to food. War and conflict drastically impact a country s food supply and security. Poverty Like hunger, poverty is often a structural crisis. In most cases, poverty and hunger go hand-in-hand. As more money is spent on food, less money is available to spend on health care, education, and savings. Many farmers find themselves unable to purchase seeds, tools, and farming equipment. Poverty is a cause of hunger, but it is an effect as well. Source: Concern.org 6. WHAT DOES ACTION AGAINST HUNGER DO? Evaluate nutritional needs To assess the root causes of malnutrition, ACF collects data on a community s access to natural resources, cultural practices, infrastructure, and geography. These nutritional surveys are needed to help provide an effective, customized response. Treat acute malnutrition ACF treats cases of severe acute malnutrition through both inpatient and outpatient programs. ACF staff members help to run the inpatient programs, and community members take control of the planning and coordination of all outpatient programs. Prevent acute malnutrition ACF s prevention activities provide Ready-To-Use-Foods, such as Plumpy nut, to children suffering from acute malnutrition and to communities faced with seasonal hunger. Prevention can often save the lives of millions of people while other longterm solutions are developed. Build local capacity ACF strengthens local public health systems to combat malnutrition, and field teams that consist of local staff. This allows ACF to integrate our programs into existing health structures in the communities that we work in. When a crisis subsides, ACF ensures that local capacity is in place to support continued improvements in communities nutritional health.

5 STATISTICS 870 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. The vast majority of hungry people (98%) live in developing countries, where almost 15% of the population is undernourished. Asia and the Pacific islands have the largest share of the world s hungry people (some 563 million). Under nutrition contributes to 2.6 million deaths of children under five each year one third of the global total. One out of six children roughly 100 million in developing countries is underweight. 68 million primary school-age children attend classes hungry across the developing world, with 23 million in Africa alone. 6 GLOSSARY Acute Malnutrition Acute malnutrition is the more immediate form of malnutrition, and it afflicts an estimated 55 million children worldwide. Acute malnutrition occurs when the body does not receive the right nourishment needed to support vital bodily functions. Developing country A developing country is a nation with a low living standard. The development of a country is measured by income per person, life expectancy, literacy rate, and malnutrition rates. Hunger The body s way of signalling that it is running short of food and needs something to eat. Hunger can lead to malnutrition. Malnutrition Malnutrition is defined as a state in which the physical function of the body is impaired to the point where he/she can no longer maintain natural bodily capacities. Moderate Acute Malnutrition Moderate acute malnutrition affects some 36 million children worldwide, and leaves children more susceptible to disease and illness. Rural A rural area is a geographic area that is located outside of towns and cities. Agriculture and food production are common in rural areas. Severe Acute Malnutrition Severe acute malnutrition is acute malnutrition s most extreme form, and is a deadly condition if left untreated. Severe acute malnutrition affects an estimated 19 million children worldwide. Undernourishment Undernourishment describes the status of people whose food intake does not include enough calories (or energy) to meet the body s minimum needs.
