Some producers prefer using row crop plnters with row spcing greter thn 15 inches in n effort to mnge residue nd control seeding depth. We need to determine if differences exist etween hyrids nd open-pollinted vrieties when plnted in 3 in rows. Ojectives: 1. Evlute cultivr selection s tool for winter cnol grown with wide (>15 inch) row spcing. Methods: In the fll of 211 two tril loctions were identified, one t the North Centrl Reserch Sttion ner Lhom, OK, nd one ner Stillwter, OK to evlute the effect of row spcing on seed yield. To meet this ojective severl high yielding cnol cultivrs were chosen for oth loctions. Tretments were rndomized in complete lock design with 4 replictions. Row spcing tretments consisted of 7.5, 15, nd 3 inches. A complete list of tretments is given in Tle 1. The 7.5 nd 15 in row tretments were seeded with GretPlins no-till drill, while the 3 in row tretments were seeded with 4 row Monosem vcuum plnter equipped with Yetter row cleners. Only DKW 44-1, HyClss 115, nd Sitro were used for ll three row spcings. These three cultivrs were chosen sed on pst yield history nd they represent oth open pollinted (DKW 44-1 nd HyClss 115) nd hyrid (Sitro) cnol cultivrs. All other cultivrs were only plnted t 3 inches. 2 3" - HyClss 154 Results: Yields were excellent t oth loctions. Averge yield t Lhom ws 2647 l/c, while t Stillwter verge yield ws 1925 l/c. Below re some key oservtions on stnd estlishment etween the tretments. Emergence Row Spcing Overll, the 3 inch tretments emerged quicker nd more evenly. This ws proly due to more uniform seeding depth in the plnter tretments. A greter percent emergence ws oserved with plnted plots when compred to drilled plots. Two to three l/c seems to e dequte for 3 inch row spcing. A significnt row spcing effect ws oserved for Stillwter where the verge yield ws 729 l/c less thn the verge of the 7.5 nd 15 row spcing (Figure 1). Cultivr Performnce in 3 inch Rows Hyrids tended to perform etter in 3 in rows compred to open pollinted vrieties t Stillwter (Figure 3). Oservtions mde prior to hrvest did seem to indicte tht hyrids rnched more compred to most open pollinted vrieties. An increse in rnching would help compenste for the wider row spcing.

Seeding rte cn e reduced to l/c when plnting with row crop plnter. If you re utilizing row crop plnter to help mnge residue, selection of high yielding hyrid ppers to reduce yield loss ssocited with wider row spcing. Hyrid seed my e esier to meter.
