1 Science (K) 7 th Lesson Aim: To introduce some famous scientists and their achievements. Objectives: Terms: scientist, George Washington Carver, slave, Tuskegee Institute, laboratory Material: A scientist is a person skilled in science. George Washington Carver was a scientist who helped farmers learn how to grow new crops and take better care of the soil. He studied many different crops, but his favorites were peanuts, sweet potatoes and pecans. Sensory: (S) Write S C I E N T I S T. Spell P E A N U T. Question: A scientist is a person who is skilled in. math or science George Washington Carver was a scientist who studied. crops or animals Material: George Washington Carver was born in the 1860s. His mother was a slave, owned by a farmer in Missouri named Moses Carver. A slave is a person who is owned by another person and can be sold at the owner's will. The slaves were brought to America from Africa. They were forced to come - they did not come because they wanted to. Sensory: (T) Show a picture of George Washington Carver. Carver said they needed to improve the soil by growing other crops, like peanuts. People laughed at him; no one ate peanuts back then. Carver invented ways to use peanuts so people would listen to him. Sensory: (S) Spell C O T T O N. (T) Show pictures of a cotton plant and a peanut plant. Question: Carver wanted to help farmers in the south improve the crop. He said the farmers could improve the cotton or cabbage soil by. giving it more water or growing other crops Material: A laboratory or lab is a place for making scientific experiments and tests. Carver worked in his lab to show how peanuts could be used to make shoe polish, ink, oil, cattle feed, shampoo, soap and shaving cream. He discovered over 300 ways to use the peanut.
