DIFS Live OVERVIEW OF THE MAIN ACTIVITIES, APPROACHES AND OUTCOMES F R A N K J O O ST E N, P R O GRAMME C O O R D I N ATO R
Four questions 1. What was our assignment? 2. What have we done? 3. Why have we done it that way? 4. What did we achieve? 2
DIFS Live Objectives Assist farmers, processors, traders and other stake-holders to develop sustainable models for production and supply in the dairy and broiler sectors in West Java. Expected to contribute towards: a) Higher income levels of Indonesian smallholder producers and SME s b) Improve access to affordable and safe animal protein products among urban consumers. 3
DIFS-Live Intervention logic in the broiler sector Interventions in the broiler sector: 1. Consumer campaign on cooled chicken 2. Improving slaughter practices 3. Broiler farming improvements 2. Slaughterhouses improve hygiene and cooling 3. Broiler farmers improve production & productivity 1. Higher demand for safe and cooled chicken
Three components in the broiler sector & expected main outcomes 1. Consumer awareness, attitude & behaviour 1.Increased consumer awareness of cooled poultry meat 2.Increased intention to buy cooled poultry meat among consumers in Jakarta area 3.Increased number of Jakarta consumers have a preference / desire for consuming cooled poultry meat 2. Slaughter sector hygiene and transformation 1.Improved waste management and good hygienic practices adopted at participating slaughterhouses 2.Improved skills and knowledge among slaughterers at pilot facilities 3.Improved insight among government officials on the economic, environmental and chain consequences of modernisation in the poultry slaughtering sector 4.Improved skills and knowledge among advisors and inspectors in West Java 3. Broiler Farm Improvements 1.Improved productivity and animal welfare in broiler farming systems 2.Improved poultry production practices based on Animal Focussed Management (AFM) 3.Commercial uptake of the improved broiler house models demonstrated 4.Increased capacity among public sector partners to support broiler farm innovations 5.Improved vocational training on broiler farming in West Java 5
Intervention logic in the dairy sector The government of Indonesia wishes to increase the level of self sufficiency for milk and milk products Productivity of dairy cattle on farms in Indonesia can still be improved considerably Lack and quality of feed is one of major limitations to increased dairy farm productivity Main challenge for dairy farmers in West Java: Production and availability of quality roughage throughout the year Access to improved concentrate feeds Incorporating better feed management in the overall dairy farming practices 6
One component in the dairy feed sector Planned outcomes: 1. Improved cow productivity 2. Improved feed practices adopted 3. Economic viability of improved feed rations proven 4. Improved fodder supply and fodder management 5. Improved concentrate supply 6. Economic viability of production of good quality concentrate 7. Improved supply of ingredients for the production of concentrate feed 8. Increased knowledge of extension workers and staff feed production regarding feeding dairy cattle and feed production 9. Increased knowledge of farmers regarding feeding dairy cattle and feed production 7
Consumer campaign 8
Research, campaign development, implementation and evaluation Press events: Launch of campaign Road shows Website ( Social Media: Twitter Facebook Blogs Monitoring & evaluation of effects of the campaign on the knowledge, attitude and consumer behavior Handing over of campaign responsibilities to partners in the sector 9
