Robust calves well begun is half done Jaap Boes, M.Sc., Ph.D. Animal Health & Welfare SEGES Animal Innovation

Prologue In summer 2017 several applications for funding of projects concerning calves were submitted to the Danish Cattle Levy Fund (KAF) The KAF board decided that there was a need for coordinated action and asked for an integrated approach An interdisciplinary R&D project for was submitted by 4 partners: SEGES (project leader) Copenhagen University DTU Veterinary Institute Aarhus University

Use of medicine Diarrhea and pneumonia Cost Management Bull calves vs. heifer calves What makes a robust calf??? Vaccination Data Mortality Biosecurity Colostrum

Objective To enhance production of healthy and robust calves by means of knowledge and tools to improve calf health and performance through better management. This will be achieved through Systematic collection of knowledge and data from clusters of dairy and veal farms Development of diagnostic tools for monitoring of calf health and immune status Test of alternatives to antibiotic treatment (probiotics, NSAID s, antibiotic-free production) Development and implementation of IT management tools

Work Package Lead AP1 - Calf clusters SEGES A. Collection of data on calf management and Bodil Højlund (AU) health (cross-sectional study) B. Cohort study - sampling + clinical examinations C. Implementing new results / communication SEGES Henrik L. Martin (SEGES) AP2 - Calf health status DTU A. Immune status Mogens Vestergaard (AU) B. Objective health monitoring Lars Erik Larsen (DTU) AP3 - Alternatives to antibiotics KU A. Anti-inflammatory treatment Nynne Capion (KU) B. Prevention with probiotics Jakob Sehested (AU) C. Antibiotic-free production Carsten Enevoldsen (KU) AP4 - Effective management systems A. Data analysis - associations between parameters AU Mogens Krogh (AU) B. Development of management tools Liza R. Nielsen (KU) C. Development of IT tools in DMS SEGES

WP1. CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY OF CALF MANAGEMENT CALF CLUSTERS (The link between dairy and veal production) A. Collection of information and data in 20 veal and 100 dairy herds B. Cohort study of 2x10 calves in 10 veal and 10 dairy herds C. Data- and sample store for Calf clusters D. Communication of results to participating herds and rest of cattle sector AP2. CALF HEALTH STATUS A. Immune status in young calves B. Objective health monitoring using correct diagnostics AP3. ALTERNATIVES TO ANTIBIOTICS A. Anti-inflammatory treatment as an alternative B. Prevention with pre-biotics C. The road to antibiotic-free calf production AP4. EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS A. Data analysis of associations between health parameters B. Development of management tool C. Prototyper of IT tool in DMS

WP 1 What we didn t know about calves Why do we want to carry out the activities in WP 1? In contrast to adult cows, there is a lack of systematic information and data on calf production (health, housing, feeding, management etc.) If you don t have the basic information it is difficult to know what to improve If you don t have the proper tools it is difficult to measure the effect of the improvements There is a straight connection between dairy herds and veal producers this should be exploited a lot more

Pain relief treatment as an alternative B. Prevention with pre-biotics C. The road to antibiotic-free calf production AP4. EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS A. Data analysis of associations between health parameters B. Development of management tool C. Prototyper of IT tool in DMS

WP 2 What is a healthy calf? Why do we want to perform the activities in WP 2? The veal producer (and the dairy farmer!) needs to know if the calf entering his farm has a sufficient immune status we need a tool to measure this Disease patterns are quite herd specific can objective and tailor-made disease monitoring / diagnostics be useful in disease prevention and control?

WP 3 Do we need to use antibiotics? Why do we want to carry out the activities in WP 3? The cattle industry is committed to a reduction of antibiotic use in calves which means there is a need for alternatives (prevention and/or treatment) Do sick animals always require antibiotics or is pain relief and anti-inflammatory treatment in many cases sufficient? Prevention is better than cure can probiotics be useful? And will it, in the end, be possible to produce veal calves without the use of any antibiotics?

WP 4 Making the right decisions Why do we need yet another management system? We need to improve the farmer s decision making possibilities We need to define robustness and how to measure it We need an IT based tool that enables the farmer to register data, set goals for his production, and evaluate if he is making progress

Take home message The Robust calves project will deliver new knowledge and tools to improve health and performance in dairy and veal calves Ambitious? Yes. Exciting? Definitely! See you in 4 years
