1 Morrisons Traditional Beef Scheme Declaration for Approved Finishers I, (name of business)., request to be an approved finisher for the Morrisons Traditional Beef Scheme. I have read and understand the requirements attached and agree to abide by these requirements. I understand that I will not receive any premiums available under this scheme, or any other benefits, until 100 days have elapsed from the date of approval, which will be notified to me by post. Signature: Name: Address: Date: Postcode:. Please return this declaration, together with your Estimate of Forward Numbers and Finishing Diet to: Livestock Department Woodhead Bros (Colne) Ltd Whitewalls Industrial Estate Colne, Lancs BB8 8LH Approval is at the discretion of Wm Morrison Supermarkets. 1
2 Requirements for Approved Finishers AIM: Introduction of a new product to the range of beef products available from Wm Morrison Supermarkets, and the growth of UK beef supply. Appropriate control of the production process will be exercised post-farm gate by Woodhead Bros/Wm Morrison Supermarkets. To ensure consistency of production at farm level a number of requirements are outlined below. Wm.Morrison Supermarkets has worked with SAC Consulting in the production of this Declaration and the development of the Prescribed Finishing Diet described below. 1. All eligible cattle must be from British native beef breeds, or their crosses. A list of these breeds can be seen in Appendix A. The breed description on the BCMS passport shall be definitive for these purposes. 2. Existing suppliers of cattle to Woodhead Bros/Morrisons should also complete this declaration if they wish to be part of the Morrisons Traditional Beef Scheme. 3. All eligible cattle must be fed on the Prescribed Finishing Diet for a minimum of 100 days before being supplied to us. For this reason this Declaration must be submitted at least 100 days before your cattle will be eligible. 4. The Prescribed Diet must meet the following criteria: a) Minimum 35% starch by dry matter b) Maximum 10% of total dry matter from potatoes, or potato-derived products. c) Vitamin E should be included at a rate of 500 IU per head per day d) Products known to taint or discolour meat (i.e. onions/ beetroot) are not permitted. e) Urea and extracted starch products may not be used. You are advised to consult feed specialist/company and/or independent adviser to ensure that your finishing ration complies with the above. Vitamin E is an antioxidant which enhances the visual appearance of meat, preventing discolouration and prolongs the shelf life. To ensure the required Vitamin E inclusion rate it is recommended that you contact your mineral merchant. Using your existing mineral formulation may be uneconomic. 5. Store cattle may, in some circumstances, require a transitional period to allow them to adjust to the increased starch levels in the Prescribed Finishing Diet. This period is likely to vary from farm to farm but the aim is to prevent acidosis in the cattle joining the finishing unit caused by increased access to foods with high starch levels. You are advised to consult a specialist or adviser, in line with normal good practice. 6. Outdoor finishing of cattle is acceptable providing that the recommended dietary requirements detailed above for starch and Vitamin E are met. This will necessitate supplementary bunker feeding whilst at grass for at least 100 days. 7. You are required to attach a copy of your finishing diet to this declaration. If more than one diet is used please attach copies of each. These will be treated in strictest confidence. 2
3 8. Approved Finishers are required to develop a health plan in conjunction with their veterinary surgeon. 9. Approved finishing units should be Farm Assured. 10. Eligible cattle may not be kept on slatted floors. 11. Approved Finishers may be required to be independently audited and must allow inspectors approved by Wm Morrison Supermarkets access to their unit given reasonable notice 12. Approved Finishers must supply Woodhead Bros with an estimate of finished cattle to be supplied to Woodhead Bros over the next six months. This is designed to assist in our forward planning. The attached proforma (Appendix C) should be used in the first instance. Thereafter, a proforma will be sent out on a quarterly basis thereafter. Please note these are estimates and are not binding. 13. Eligible cattle from Approved Finishers will receive a premium of 10p per kilogram (DW) over our standard base price. 14. Eligible Shorthorn or Shorthorn Cross animals will receive an additional 10ppkg DW premium (i.e. 20ppkg total). Dairy Shorthorns are excluded. 15. Eligible cattle must fall within the target zone on attached grid (Appendix B). Those falling outside the target zone will be paid according to our standard grid. 16. Eligible cattle must weigh between 260kg and 380 kg CCW (Cold Carcass Weight) 17. Eligible cattle must be under thirty months of age. 18. Only steers and heifers are eligible. 19. Long-horned cattle (e.g. Highland and Longhorns) must be de-horned. Other breeds are listed in Appendix A. 20. Wm Morrison Supermarkets PLC/Woodhead Bros, reserve the right to alter this specification and the requirements of this scheme from time to time. 21. All other terms and conditions are as Woodhead Bros standard T&C s.
