Improving Water Management WP4 Challenges: Low and sparse rainfall with frequent drought (less mm, CC) and overuse of water resource (surface and groundwater) => no sustainable Research should focus on: Design new ways of water management Ensure greater equity and efficiency of resource use Monitor impacts on ecosystems, biodiversity, soils and society at different level Win-win integration of local skill and scientific knowledge Research fields hydrological processes: surface, karstic and sedimentary aquifers Process modeling and coupling of models for an entire watershed Strategies for sustainable integrated water management (treatment, transport) Total efficiency index of water and its components Waste water reuse Technical and economic efficiency of irrigation Linkage of the scales of governance and resource allocation for watershed Cross-border water management, institutions, relations, decision support tools ARIMNet2 KoM_ 4-5 February,

Maintain Soil Potential/Fertility WP4 Challenges: restricted availability of arable land, uneven distribution of rainfall and water scarcity for irrigation, especially due to urban and industrial uses Research should focus on: Better understanding the mechanism of soil erosion and protection Soil & water management to face water scarcity Soil microbiology and nutrient cycles in the management of the fertility Win-win integration of local skill and scientific knowledge Research fields Mechanistic approaches to the soil/water/vegetation continuum Water cycle modeling at different spatial and temporal scales Effect of global change on soil structure and capacity Soil biological activity Methods for measuring soil hydraulic properties Concepts and methods of evaluation of soil functions Land and plant management methods for the optimization of Green Water Remediation of degraded soil Knowledge of traditional soil conservation systems ARIMNet2 KoM_ 4-5 February,

Objectives One of the key issues in the southern and eastern Mediterranean countries concerning agriculture is the need to increase the research capacities at local, national and regional levels through capacity building and exchange of researchers as well as access to technology platforms and databases. The WP4 purpose is therefore to implement pilot actions of joint activities on the basis of the suggestions proposed in WP3. Description of work and role of participants / Approach On the basis of the work done in WP1, two relevant topics will be selected in order to develop pilot actions of joint activities. For each selected topics: the teams, the projects, the needs and gaps at Mediterranean scale, and the opportunities for cooperation in the ARIMNet2 context and in the future will be identified. Pilot actions of joint activities will be designed and implemented in order to reinforce research capacity, increase exchanges of researchers and staff and strengthen networking at Mediterranean level.

Task 4.1 Choice of topics for joint activities in Mediterranean agricultural research (M1-M2) Task leaders: CIRAD-FR; contributors: INIA-ES, ARC-EG, MESRT-TN and DEMETER-GR The objective of this task is to identify relevant topics for which joint activities could provide added value and are suitable for launching pilot actions. Description: In this task a specific session of the kick-off meeting will be organized to debate and discuss the comparative advantages of different topics in order to select 2-3 significant ones for implementing pilot actions of joint activities. This discussion will be based on the work done in the ARIMNet, namely the learning of the ARIMNet call. Two topics will be finally selected. ARIMNet2 KoM_ 4-5 February,

Task 4.2 Designing the joint activities. (M2- M19) Task leader: ARC-EG; contributors: DEMETER-GR, CIRAD-FR,INRAA- DZ and MESRT-TN The objective of this task is to propose, on each of the selected topics, relevant pilot actions aiming to reinforce research capacity, it will be based on activities such as exchange of researchers and staff, training of young researchers, opening of laboratories, platforms and programes and networking. For each topic, the agricultural research teams, projects and networks, will be identified. Simultaneously a review based on the literature of possible joint activities in agricultural research at Mediterranean scale and in the other regions in the world will be issued (M2-8). Past and current experiences of partners in joint activities. Identification and assessment of significant experiences, including the evaluations of the teams, which have led these, joint activities (M4-12). A workshop (WK-T4.2) will be organized joining all the partners to debate and validate two pilot actions (M 19).The teams and key-persons for constituting advisor committees of the two selected pilot actions will be identified

Task 4.3 Implementation of pilot actions of joint activities (M12-M45) Task leader: CIRAD-FR; contributors: ARC-EG and DEMETER-GR Pilot actions will be drafted and implemented. They should focus on capacity building of young researchers and mobility between the teams of Mediterranean partners. The modalities of each pilot action will be defined: participants (criteria of eligibility and selection procedures), dates, locations, topics, programs, budget and coordination. (From M12 to 36) The two actions will be implemented successively (for example, training for young researchers for M15-36 and researcher mobility M24-42) Synthesis written reports including individual and institutional evaluation will be issued at the end of each action/ M36-45 ARIMNet2 KoM_ 4-5 February,

Task 4.4 Assessment of pilot actions, lessons learnt and next steps for the future (M8-M45) Task leader: DEMETER-GR; contributors: ARC-EG, CIRAD-FR The assessment of the pilot actions will be conducted from the start to the end of the process It will be based on knowledge improvement, better sharing tools and methods, significant reduction of scientific gaps, integration in research teams, writing papers together and new collaborative projects and perspectives. The criteria for the evaluation of the pilot actions will be prepared and discussed in the WK-T4.2. They will be used to evaluate the pilot actions throughout the project. Presentations of results will be made in the governing board annual meetings. ARIMNet2 KoM_ 4-5 February,

WP4 / Deliverables D4.1. Agreement on the 2 selected topics to implement pilot actions of joint activities (M12) D4.2. Agreement on actions to be done in the two pilot actions (M19) D4.3. Report of assessment of the two pilot actions of joint activities (M48) ARIMNet2 KoM_ 4-5 February,
