28 Significance of mountains Key social, economic and environmental role in the development of the nations and peoples Global significance as they provide goods and ecosystems services essential for sustainable development, in particular to the lowlands and the communities living in these areas Highly vulnerable to global changes. Given the tight highland- lowland linkage, these changes may have serious impacts far beyond the mountain boundaries. Innovative institutional arrangements/initiatives for regional and transboundary cooperation aiming at a multi-sectoral approach are required to trigger governance models and decision support systems

29 The Rio Earth Summit 2012 outlook June 2012, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil The objective of the Conference was to secure renewed political commitment for sustainable development, assess the progress to date and the remaining gaps in the implementation of the outcomes of the major summits on sustainable development, and address new and emerging challenges The Conference focused on two key themes: (a) a green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication; and (b) the institutional framework for sustainable development.

30 7 Critical Issues at Rio+20 The preparations for Rio+20 have highlighted seven areas which need priority attention; these include decent jobs, energy, sustainable cities, food security and sustainable agriculture, water, oceans and disaster readiness.

32 Mainstream mountains into the political discussions leading to Rio+20 Some key messages of the mountain language Recognition of benefits derived from mountain regions are essential for sustainable development. Mountain ecosystems play a crucial role in providing water resources to a large portion of the world s population; fragile mountain ecosystems are particularly vulnerable. Role of mountains as home to communities, including indigenous peoples, who have developed sustainable uses of their resources and who are often marginalized strengthen cooperative action with effective involvement of all relevant stakeholders, by establishing new or strengthening existing regional arrangements and centers of competence for sustainable mountain development. Greater efforts toward the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity. We encourage States to adopt a long-term vision and holistic approaches ( )

34 Rio +20 -The Future We want Mountains 210. We recognize that the benefits derived from mountain regions are essential for sustainable development. Mountain ecosystems play a crucial role in providing water resources to a large portion of the world s population; fragile mountain ecosystems are particularly vulnerable to the adverse impacts of climate change, deforestation and forest degradation, land use change, land degradation and natural disasters; and mountain glaciers around the world are retreating and getting thinner, with increasing impacts on the environment and human well-being We further recognize that mountains are often home to communities, including indigenous peoples and local communities, who have developed sustainable uses of mountain resources. These communities are, however, often marginalized, and we therefore stress that continued effort will be required to address poverty, food security and nutrition, social exclusion and environmental degradation in these areas. We invite States to strengthen cooperative action with effective involvement and sharing of experience of all relevant stakeholders, by strengthening existing arrangements, agreements and centres of excellence for sustainable mountain development, as well as exploring new arrangements and agreements, as appropriate We call for greater efforts towards the conservation of mountain ecosystems, including their biodiversity. We encourage States to adopt a long-term vision and holistic approaches, including through incorporating mountain-specific policies into national sustainable development strategies, which could include, inter alia, poverty reduction plans and programmes for mountain areas, particularly in developing countries. In this regard, we call for international support for sustainable mountain development in developing countries.
