1 Sikkim By the end of first week of September 2005, the crop situation in the State is satisfactory. Paddy, cardomom and ginger crops are badly affected in Linkey and Deeri in Pakyoung subdivision due to land slides and continuous rain. The State has received normal rainfall during monsoon season. Rice is at flag leaf initiation stage. Maize is at harvesting stage. Late sown potato is at tuber maturity/early harvesting stage (high hills). Ginger is at late vegetative stage. Minor pests and diseases incidences are reported in large cardamom. Maize The crop is at harvesting stage and in satisfactory condition. Give good and strong support to the plants so that the plants do not fall down during strong winds and heavy rains. Continue harvesting matured cobs on bright sunny days. Harvested crop should be dried properly and store safely from insect and rodents. Ginger The crop is at late vegetative stage and in satisfactory condition. Ginger is badly affected in Linkey and Deeri in Pakyoung subdivision due to land slides and continuous rain. Monitor the crop for the occurrence of pests and diseases and diseased plants should be rouged out. Provide drainage in the drains between 1 foot high crop beds, to avoid water stagnation and to prevent rhizome rot disease during spells of rain. Weeding may be done on non-rainy days. There was deficient rainfall during last week and there are chances of rainfall at a few places only in the State for the next two days. Under these circumstances, apply required irrigation to the crop to bring the soil moisture to its field capacity. Kharif vegetables Kharif vegetables are at harvesting stage and in satisfactory condition. Avoid using pesticides as the crops are now at harvesting stage. Continue harvesting on bright sunny days.

2 Orange Rice The crop is at fruiting stage and in satisfactory condition. New planting is continued. In case of new planting, the triangular/rectangular pits already dug should be filled with 15 kg organic manure and compost mixed with soil in equal ratio and seedlings planted upto the level of extricated roots and allowance made for enough air and sunlight, otherwise the plants would be prone to diseases. Planting may be continued on non-rainy days. After planting, proper drainage must be provided to avoid water stagnation in the field. Deshooting/debugging of newly planted and 1 to 4 years old trees up to a basal height of 40 to 50 cm to be done at monthly intervals. There was deficient rainfall during last week and there are chances of rainfall at a few places only in the State for the next two days. Under these circumstances, apply required irrigation to the crop to bring the soil moisture to its field capacity. The crop is at flag leaf initiation stage in high hills and in satisfactory condition. The crop is badly affected in Linkey and Deeri in Pakyoung subdivision due to land slides and continuous rain. Water level 3-4cm should be maintained to enable maximum tillering as in the case of insufficient water, tillering would be less and facilitates excess growth of weeds. Potato (seed crop) Late planted potato is at maturity / early harvesting stage (in high hills) and the crop is in satisfactory condition. Weeding to be done properly on non-rainy days. Large Cardamom The crop is at capsule maturity stage and in satisfactory condition. The crop is badly affected in Linkey and Deeri in Pakyoung subdivision due to land slides and continuous rain. Rouging of chirke and foorkey affected plants may be done at regular intervals and destroyed by burning. One round weeding may be done in plantations for easy movement of pollinators for getting higher yields on non-rainy days. Overhead pandals may be erected in sucker 50% shade. There was deficient rainfall during last week and there are chances of rainfall at a few places only in the State for the next two days. Under these circumstances, apply required irrigation to the crop to bring the soil moisture to its field capacity. Rabi vegetables This is proper time of sowing rabi vegetables Select pretreated, healthy and certified seeds of winter vegetables and sown in well prepared and appropriate nursery beds in the vegetable garden on non-rainy days. Organic manure/compost should be applied on non-rainy days in the garden.

Rice (Kar/ Kuruvai/ Sornavari) is at vegetative/ panicle initiation/milky stages, respectively. There are chances of rainfall at a few places only in the State for the next two days. There are chances of mm assured rainfall only for the next week. Under these circumstances, apply irrigation to the crop, if required, to bring the soil moisture to its field capacity. Early (Dec-Jan) and mid (Feb-Mar) season crops are at grand growth stage. Late (Apr-May) season crop is at active vegetative stage. The crops are in satisfactory condition. Remove dried leaves on 150th to 210th day. Do double line propping with trash twist at the age of 210 days. Partial earthing up may be done on non-rainy days. flowering/pegging stage and in satisfactory condition. Continue sowing on a non-rainy day and adopt 140 Kg kernel/ha as seed rate for rainfed crop and 125 Kg/ha for irrigated crop. Seed treatment with Trichoderma 4gm per Kg of seed before sowing. Top dressing Nitrogen to be done in 3 split doses at active tillering, panicle initiation and at heading on a non-rainy day. Pest surveillance to be made for earhead bug in early sown crop. Apply Quinalphos or Carbaryl first during flowering on a non-rainy day and second a week later. Due to recent showers, there may be chances for disease outbreak. Monitor the crop for disease incidences and take up plant protection measures. Summer cotton crop is at harvesting stage and in satisfactory condition. Continue harvesting the crop on bright sunny days. Uttar Pradesh By the end of first week of September 2005, the crop situation of the State is satisfactory.
