1 2010 North Dakota FFA Convention Pedigree Evaluation [50 points] Given the following scenario, place the attached four (4) pedigrees in the order best suited to meet the long term goals of the purebred Holstein farm described in the following scenario. Scenario Gilbert Haugen and Sons Dairy, a smaller family run dairy farm, is planning to purchase a cow at an upcoming auction. They have narrowed it down to four cows that they really like, when looking at the sales catalog. They emphasize milk yield and fat and protein production, with special interest in type production index and feet and leg composite. If the price is the same for all four cows what would be the order of the cows that they would purchase? Rank the cow pedigree provided below according to their numbers (# ) below: Placing: 1 ST 2 ND 3 RD 4 TH Reasons: Filename: 1 PedigreeQUIZ2010.docx Page 1 of 1

2 KEY 2010 North Dakota FFA Convention Pedigree Evaluation [50 points] Given the following scenario, place the attached four (4) pedigrees in the order best suited to meet the long term goals of the purebred Holstein farm described in the following scenario. Rank the cow pedigree provided below according to their numbers (# ) below: Placing: ST 2 ND 3 RD 4 TH Cuts: = (9) Reasons: In this scenario, the preferred placing would be with cuts of In a close top pair, two cows that have very similar milk yield records for each lactation, the younger 4 cow places over 1 because she has an advantage of a higher percentage of milk fat, plus a slight advantage in both udder and feet & leg composite scores. In the middle pair, 1 places easily over 3. Granted 3 has an advantage in 305 day milk components, 1 produces more milk and a much better composite score for feet and legs. In the bottom pair, 3 places over 2 because she has a higher udder composite score and PTA for milk fat. The composite TPI score for 2 would rank the lowest in the class.
