: a web-assistance tool for durum wheat growers Francesca Salinari- Horta Srl

is an interactiveweb-based service which provides decision supports for holisticcrop management of high-quality durum wheat. The DSS provides decision supports for seeding fertilisation weed control disease management The DSS provides also information on: weather crop growth and development

The decision supports are calibrated on a selected group of varieties considers the variety innovation as a driving force and the adoption of the correct growing management techiniquesas the mean to allow the full expression of the potential of the interesting genetic accession of durum wheat of Horta s partners CGS and PSB

The decision supports are elaborated ad-hoc for each cropunit on the basis of their specific agronomic and environmental conditions A crop-unit is a field sown on an uniformpiece of land (i.e., characteristics of the soil), with the same wheat variety, and cropped in an uniform manner all season long (from the previous crop to harvest)

The decision supports are based on static-site profiles and site-specific information. the static-site profile information includes factors about the site that do not change substantially during the growing season(such as previous crop, soil characteristics, cultivar, etc.) the end-user fills in the crop unit description form at the beginning of the season site-specific information may change continuously and are transmitted directly to the DSS as measurements (such as weather data) or scouting reports(such as the current crop status) a weather station located (the closest and most representative for the crop unit environment) periodically sends data to the DSS a phenological models, which considers static-site profile information and receives as input the weather data, simulates the crop development over the season

is an interactive, user-friendly, webbased portal that receives real-time data from wheat fields and provides support: forthewholecycleofdurumwheat; for a set of specific varieties; elaborated ad-hoc for the Crop Unit using both staticsite profile and site-specific information. The end user of the service is a person who makes decisions about the crop management or suggests the proper actions to the wheat-grower; therefore, she/he can be a technician, an advisor or a wheat-grower.

Conceptual diagram of knowledge analyses scouting Crop environment Crop info & data Weather data weather stations Databases DSS Crop units Weather rules algorithms models Data analysis Interpretation Expert knowledge Decision support Action Decision process

Actors and infrastructures in Network of weather stations Pilot Farms Experimental platforms Horta Technological infrastructure Client enterprise Crop manager Crop Unit Crop Unit

Pilot farms Farms where the weather stations are located Durum wheat is grown in fields of these farms and managed according to the decision supports provided by Data collected in these farms are used for in-itinere evaluation of the ouput provided by and for a complessive validation of the system

Experimental platforms Small plot experiments Trials sites big plots micro plots Comparison, in different environments, of: varieties agricultural inputs (e.g., N fertilization) disease management strategies

Conclusions: points of strenght Architecture of the system: information flows to and from the environment in an endless loop that begins with sensing and ends with action A holistic vision of wheat cultivation problems: the DSS takes into account and provides decision supports for all the key elements of the production chain, from strategic choices to tactical operations Delivered using the web: i) high accessibility; ii) easy and continuous updating (new knowledge can be provided to farmers in fast and efficient manner); iii) hands-on contact between users and the provider Decision support clear, reliable, and timely

Conclusions: remarks is not designed to replace the decision makerbut to helpin making choices by providing additional information represents an important platform for implementing new services and further refining the existent ones

New services and developments Certification Weather forecast (up to 7 days) Data base products (fungicides, insecticides) DSS Insects Field book Carbon footprint and other sustainability indicators Models updating based on R&D activity DSS common wheat
