The Honey Bee Health Crisis Is that still a thing?
Interesting Facts on the subject More Beekeepers and Bees than prior to 2006 and Colony Collapse Disorder Higher Annual Hive losses too (40%) Higher Input costs (up 100% since 2006) U.S. Honey Production, by colony, is down by 23% compared to 2006 More Beekeepers, yes, but fewer commercial beekeepers than ever, which implies consolidation in the industry
The Major Challenges are Familiar Characters Parasites Pathogens Poor Nutrition Pesticides
What is the solution? Is there a relative factor in any of these stressors, that if addressed might really help? Research has demonstrated that hives with access to abundant clean forage are far more likely to survive, and are more productive than hives in areas with less floral resources available. Bees in poorer foraging conditions often become crop focused where pesticide contamination is more likely. Mono floral diets do not provide required nutritional profiles. Poor nutrition or contaminated food can result in synergistic hive health issues that lead to hive collapse. Bees with proper nutrition have better immune response and can better metabolize pesticides.
So, habitat is the answer? How does that work in these Modern Landscapes?
A Unique Conservation Solution
Critical pollinator and wildlife Habitat is disappearing in the U.S.

You can help reverse this trend and make a difference.
Monarch butterflies are losing their habitats 2.8 Acres 90+% Decline in 2 Decades
Monarch butterflies rely on milkweed, or Asclepias, as a food source and host plant to reproduce. The once-plentiful milkweed is in serious decline. The Eastern Monarch Butterfly population has decline 90% since In 2015, the entire eastern North American monarch butterfly population fit into an area just 2.8 acres in size. That s only three football fields!
If we do nothing, monarch butterflies have a 60% likelihood of extinction in 20 years.
Declining habitats affect honey bees too Up to 40% of America s honey bee colonies die each winter. Lack of clean, diverse habitat is a major factor in Honey Bee Health
When honey bees thrive, so does our food supply One-third of our food supply including most fruit and vegetable crops requires the work of a pollinator to make it to our table. Of the 100 crops that account for 90% of Human food, 71 of them require bee pollination. 80% of flowering plants require pollination by honey bees and other insects
That s 1 in 3 bites of food! Dependent on Pollinators: almonds, apples, avocados, blueberries, cranberries, cherries, kiwi fruit, macadamia nuts, asparagus, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, onions, legume seeds, pumpkins, squash, and sunflowers Benefit from Pollinators: apricot, citrus, peaches, pears, nectarines, plums, grapes, brambleberries, strawberries, olives, melon, peanuts, cotton, soybeans, and sugarbeets
Honey bees need healthy habitats to thrive
Top 10 Honey Producing States 7 of the top 10 honey-producing states account for 57% of honey production All Other States = 35,374,000 North Dakota = 33,120,000 Wisconsin = 3,540,000 Michigan = 4,675,000 Montana = 14,946,000 Louisiana = 4,900,000 Texas = 6,254,000 Minnesota = 7,540,000 California = 10,890,000 Florida = 13,420,000 South Dakota = 14,840,000
But honey bees habitat is being lost in just a decade, almost 24 million of grassland were converted to crop ground
Taking valuable habitat away from pollinators and other wildlife June 2012
And leaving pollinators with nowhere to thrive July 2013
7 of the top 10 honey production states fall into that area of decline
The top 20 birds in decline 5 of them are species that benefit from the same habitats that support monarch butterflies and honeybees Source: Audubon 2007
Often farmers subscribe to the theory that some yield is better than no yield, producing on less-than-optimum land and turning to crop insurance or CRP
But consider these real-world CRP results

The Bee & Butterfly Habitat Fund has a better use for their land.
Our Solution: Conservation fitting into the farm & ranch plan There is room for conservation on every operation; it s just a matter of finding a match.

Our Vision Using funds donated by generous corporate sponsors and individual donors, The Bee & Butterfly Habitat Fund is identifying opportunities to establish specifically designed pollinator habitat to help honey bee and monarch butterfly populations thrive.

We are right on the edge. Working together to build healthy, sustainable pollinator habitat. Using science-based solutions to deliver results. Bringing together farmers, landowners, conservationists, scientists and beekeepers to precisely target pollinators needs. Engineering projects that provide appropriate floral diversity, density and bloom duration to optimize forage potential.

How does it work? Biologists: Consult with landowners to identify potential areas within a farming and ranching operation that are suitable for pollinator habitat Design NextGen Habitat Projects to maximize pollinator benefits on the land. Landowners receive: Free seed mixtures Annual rental payment Planting incentive payment A three- to six-year contract
Successfully piloted in 2 states expanding to 4 more for 2017 We piloted the program successfully in North Dakota and South Dakota we even have a waiting list! Average project to date: 15 acres Six years More than 6.58 million milkweed seeds planted to date Expanding to Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri
What makes NextGen Habitat Projects different? Better habitat design = less cost, less weeds, and more benefit High-quality, diverse mixes of native and introduced forbes and legumes Create the ideal habitat for pollinators and monarchs
What makes NextGen Habitat Projects different? Working to improve pollinator health and populations in new and exciting ways using tools including: Precision agriculture High-quality habitat standards Cost-effective seeding mixtures A team of biologists to work with landowners one-on-one
Why is it important to provide your financial support? Provides funding for NextGen Habitat Projects that yield better results than other habitat strategies. Boosts bee and butterfly populations to sustain their species. Makes a difference in critical pollinator habitats that help maintain vital food production in the U.S.
Benefits soil, air, water quality and other wildlife including pheasants, quail and grassland songbirds. Helps many species in need of habitat, including pollinators. Encourages field to fork and other corporate sustainability efforts. Enhances native grassland and beautifies the landscape. Supports grazing land, biodiversity and wildlife.
We have a unique opportunity The spotlight is on pollinators
