5 Key Notes 14-Feb-17 All calved cows are at grass full time. The weather conditions are challenging. Cows are on 12 hour paddocks and back fenced. We hope to switch to 24 hour paddocks in a few more days if the weather remains dry. Labour & Workload Management Calving 370 cows (2 fulltime staff, 2 students & night watchman) Herd are on OAD since the start of calving and is going well. The herd will stay on OAD for another few weeks. This is a great help for labour management and good for heifer condition too. Dry cows (2 weeks before calving) get silage from 4.30pm to 7am. This is resulting in most of the herd calving during the day. You must have adequate feed face per cow to do this. This year a night watchman is working from 7pm to 6am for 5 nights per week for 4-6 weeks. This gives the lads on the farm a good night s sleep. Farm is providing lunches for the farm staff every day for the spring. Herd health is good now; we had trouble with milk fever and a few RDA s in the first 10 day. But since the cows started getting additional magnesium through the water there is little or no milk fever now. The entire farm got 23 units Urea & Sulphur on the 24-Jan.
