HOOPHOUSES FOR HEALTH AND FARM TO SCHOOL: INNOVATIVE PROGRAMMING AND PARTNERSHIPS Dru Montri, Colleen Matts, Erin Caudell and Mary Brower MSU Center for Regional Food Systems

HOOPHOUSES FOR HEALTH MSU Center for Regional Food Systems Funding provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and MDHHS

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES Build season extension capacity and infrastructure for Michigan farms Increase purchasing power and access to healthy foods for vulnerable families with children ages 0-8

HOW IT WORKS Farmers receive a loan for a hoophouse, then pay it back through food they produce on their farm. All foods are distributed to vulnerable families through farmers market sales or farm to school. MSU Center for Regional Food Systems

ELIGIBLE FOOD ITEMS Any food items grown or produced by participating farmers on their farms Value-added products are eligible if at least 50% of the ingredients by weight were grown or produced by the farmer MSU Center for Regional Food Systems

STEP 1 Farmers apply to receive funding for a zero-interest, five-year loan to build a new hoophouse. MSU Center for Regional Food Systems

STEP 2 MIFMA works with community organizations, such as Head Start and Great Start Readiness Programs, to distribute healthy food vouchers to families. MSU CRFS connects farmers with eligible schools and early childhood programs. MSU Center for Regional Food Systems

STEP 3 Families use vouchers to buy from Hoophouses for Health farmers at local farmers markets. Farmers deliver produce to designated schools and early child care providers. MSU Center for Regional Food Systems

STEP 4 Farmers submit vouchers and Farm to School sales records to MIFMA to pay off their loan. MSU Center for Regional Food Systems

THE RESULT Families get access to fresh, healthy, Michigan foods, and farmers get a new hoophouse through a zerointerest loan they paid back in produce. MSU Center for Regional Food Systems
