7 About Cape Town In 1486 Cabodas Tormentas was the first European to reach the area and named it as Cape of Storms. It was later renamed by John II of Portugal as Cape of Good Hope (Cabo da Boa Esperança). Cape Town is a coastal city in South Africa.
