12 The Importance of Breeding, Testing and Production 12 Sorghum is extremely diverse (trait discovery). Marker-assisted breeding enables rapid trait identification and movement without need to generate GMOs. Chromatin has been able to achieve 3 breeding cycles per year; a challenge for many other annual crops and impossible for perennial crops Sorghum has a very well-developed breeding system, based on cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS), which makes largescale hybrid production cost effective. Sorghum can be quickly adapted to any conversion process.
