3 What is GI? Green Infrastructure is a strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas with other environmental features designed and managed to deliver a wide range of ecosystem services in both terrestrial and aquatic environments. It is the structure enabling healthy ecosystems to deliver their multiple services to people and nature. On land, GI is present in both rural and urban settings, in protected and nonprotected areas. (European Commission 2014)

4 Green Infrastructure GI contributes to the Europe 2020 Strategy by promoting smart, sustainable and inclusive growth and supporting the shift towards a resource efficient, low-carbon, sustainable economy by investing in our natural capital. EU focus is not only on environmental benefits, but the multiple benefits GI can provide - creating jobs and sustainable growth while delivering environmental benefits to both nature and people.
