2 USRSB MEMBERS REPRESENT: THE USRSB COMMUNITY The USRSB is fueled by dedicated, capable members committed to building upon the strong foundation of U.S. beef production. These individuals include those directly involved in beef production; processing and sales; academic and research industries; and non-profit organizations. Together, the diverse group of individuals and companies work toward the USRSB s mission; to advance, support and communicate continuous improvement in the sustainability of U.S. beef production by educating and engaging the beef value-chain through a collaborative, multi-stakeholder effort. 80% of beef processed of the cattle herd 30% 28% of U.S. consumers BOARD OF DIRECTORS Chair: Rickette Collins McDonald s Corporation Chair Elect: Kim Stackhouse-Lawson JBS USA Secretary/Treasurer: Debbie Lyons-Blythe Blythe Family Farms Immediate Past-Chair: John Butler Beef Marketing Group Ben Weinheimer Texas Cattle Feeders Association Nancy Labbe World Wildlife Fund Meghan Mueseler Cargill Meat Solutions Michelle Calvo-Lorenzo Elanco Animal Health Keith Anderkin Arby s Corporation Chad Ellis Noble Research Institute Jessica Finck Merck Animal Health Steve Wooten Colorado Cattlemen s Association USRSB Annual Report

3 OUR ROLE IN SUSTAINABILITY Today, the USRSB is completing the Sustainability Framework, a complete package of resources and tools for individuals along the beef value chain to voluntarily assess their sustainability efforts. But the work doesn t stop here education, training, outreach, pilot projects, and research that advance, support, and communicate continuous improvement are among the future work of the Roundtable. All efforts are member-driven with guidance from the Board of Directors, the Indicator and Goals for Progress Working Group, and the Engagement Measurement and Progress Working Group. While the USRSB will not engage in business-to-business ventures, the tools developed are encouraged to be used in programs that verify sustainable beef systems. 5 A VISION FOR THE FUTURE Throughout 2017, the USRSB solidified the Sustainability Metrics, collecting nearly 650 comments. To continue progress, the USRSB held five in-person meetings that steered the development of USRSB Sustainability Assessment Guides. Members came to the table to successfully produce the next step in the USRSB Sustainability Framework through collaboration and reflection, finalizing the complete package of resources and preparing them for public comment. Currently, the USRSB is facilitating public comment on its complete package of resources; USRSB High-Priority Indicators, Metrics, and Sustainability Assessment Guides. Comments will provide insight from outside the USRSB membership, informing the membership as they refine the final product. This is the first step in preparing for adoption of the USRSB Sustainability Framework. Moving forward, the USRSB will build on these resources to develop tools for producers, packers, processors and retailers to voluntarily assess the sustainability of their operations. Communication will continue to strengthen and extend the Roundtable s work, raising awareness about beef sustainability both inside and outside the beef community. Outreach will leverage the USRSB Sustainability Framework, illustrating the opportunities to better meet personal sustainability goals using the self-assessment tools. Likewise, the USRSB Sustainability Framework provides an opportunity to connect consumers to individuals in the beef community, a gap the USRSB hopes to help close in the coming years. Growing membership will also be a focus in the next year. With a growing number of businesses and operations interested in joining the beef sustainability conversation, the USRSB will work to ensure everyone with a shared mission of improving the sustainability of the beef value chain has a seat at the table. Increased membership fuels financial strength, expanding the possibilities and reach of the USRSB. Finally, the Roundtable recognizes the need to reevaluate the USRSB Sustainability Framework to ensure it always meets the needs of the beef community. Looking ahead, the membership will develop a timeline and process to review its work. The USRSB s ultimate vision for the future is to ensure the U.S. beef value chain remains the trusted global leader in environmentally sound, socially responsible, and economically viable beef The Roundtable s vision for the future is driven by its strategic plan, comprised of four key strategies: BUILDING AWARENESS ENCOURAGING KNOWLEDGE AND GROWTH DEMONSTRATING PROGRESS ENSURING ORGANIZATIONAL SUCCESS 5

By recognizing common goals, the USRSB and allied initiatives can collectively engage in a transparent way and work toward continuous improvement. ACROSS THE AGRICULTURAL COMMUNITY. Joining with other leading sustainability organizations, USRSB hosted the 2017 Sustainable Agriculture Summit. The Summit convened diverse stakeholders and leading experts from across the food and agricultural supply chain, providing a platform to engage and learn more about key sustainability challenges and opportunities. ON THE GROUND. The USRSB connected with cattlemen and women from across the country at the 2018 Cattle Industry Convention and NCBA Tradeshow. With over 1,500 visitors to the booth, the tradeshow provided an opportunity to share the progress and exciting work of the USRSB. WITH ALLIED INITIATIVES. The USRSB has partnered with Field to Market: The Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture, a like-minded initiative aimed at defining sustainable production for feed commodities, such as those utilized in beef production. Together, the organizations can identify areas of engagement and explore potential pilot projects through a unified approach. THROUGH PROOF OF CONCEPT. The USRSB announced their support of the Integrity Beef Sustainability Pilot project that will incorporate the USRSB Sustainability Framework throughout the full beef value chain. The Integrity Beef Sustainability Pilot is led by USRSB members: The Noble Research Institute, the Integrity Beef Alliance, the Beef Marketing Group, Tyson Foods, Golden State Foods and McDonald s Corporation.
