1 Paddock Scale Information Booklet 2013 About Mallee Sustainable Farming Mallee Sustainable Farming (MSF) Inc. is a farmer driven organisation delivering research and extension services to the < 350mm rainfall Mallee cropping regions of New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. MSF operates within a region of over four million hectares, extending beyond Balranald in the east to Murray Bridge in the west. Our 16 year legacy MSF Inc. formed in 1997 in response to recognition that conservation farming practices had not been widely adopted across the region. Therefore, there was a need to identify the issues restricting the adoption of technology that would enhance the development of profitable and sustainable farming systems. During its first 16 years of operation, MSF has achieved a great deal. Increases in farm profitability have been observed as a result of MSF activities, along with environmental and social gains. MSF continues to strive to be relevant to farmers information needs, whether in the sphere of cereal cropping or livestock management. Our members The Mallee has approximately 2000 dryland farming families whose farming activities include cropping (wheat, barley, vetch, lupins and canola) and livestock (sheep for wool, lambs and cattle for meat). Almost half of these families are members of MSF, receiving new and timely information on research and best management practices. Such activities include Farmtalk fact sheets, farm walks, trial sites, field days and research compendium publications. To become a free MSF member log onto and fill in our online form.

2 MSF Paddock Scale Variety Trials Michael Moodie and Todd McDonald, Mallee Sustainable Farming Introduction Mallee Sustainable Farming has established paddock scale trials which are comparing a number of the latest and soon to be released wheat verities that are potentially suited to the Mallee. Last year (2012) we established one trial near Mildura and this year (2013) we have expanded the number of trials to three (Meringur, Trentham Cliffs and Kyalite). For each of these trials we have work closely with the three major suppliers of wheat varieties, Australian Grain Technologies (AGT), Intergrain and Pacific Seeds to select the best adapted varieties for the Mallee region. The varieties that have been included in the trials so far are: Mace Corack Shield Grenade CL Kord CL Phantom Scout Emu Rock IGW 3170 (Intergrain variety) We acknowledge the support for these trials provided by AGT, Intergrain and Pacific seeds including donating seed for the trials. How we implement the trials The trials are sown with the farmers own seeding equipment using a trial methodology developed by the CSIRO where every second run is a control variety. The treatment strips are sown in-between, therefore each variety is compared to a control variety sown either side. This trial design is essential to overcome the soil type variability also allows small segments of the paddock to be compared (i.e. compare variety performance on a particular soil type). The trials are harvested using a commercial header to create a yield map of the paddock. The yield map is then broken up into the treatment strips. The yield of the treatment variety is then compared to control variety in m sections along the paddock length treatment strip. 2

Seasonal conditions were poor with a late break and poor growing season rainfall (approximately 90 mm), although there was a substantial amount of sub-soil moisture prior to sowing. The trial was sown of the 18 th of June The trial compared five varieties (Shield, Corack, Scout, Grenade and Emu Rock) to Mace (Control Variety). There was little difference in grain yield between Mace and the varieties with similar maturity (Shield, Corack, Grenade and Emu Rock). However, due to the late sowing of the trial, the yield of Mace appeared to be higher than the yield of Scout which is longer maturing. Figures 1 and 2 are and example of how yields of Emu Rock and Scout compared to Mace across the paddock. Yields ranged from as low as 200 kg/ha on the heavy flats to t/ha on the sandy soils. Figure one shows that there was little difference between Emu Rock and Mace on all soil types, however in the higher yielding parts of the paddock Mace yield was superior to that of Scout. 4

21 LongReach Scout KEY FEATURES Victoria and South Australia BREEDING Pedigree: Sunstate/QH71-6//YITPI Scout (LPB ) was a cross made by David Bonnett in the GrainGene joint venture. Since 2004, the variety has been developed and extensively evaluated by the LongReach Plant Breeders technical team led by Dr Bertus Jacobs. The line was entered into National Variety Trials for the first time in PLANT CHARACTERISTICS AND DISEASE RESISTANCE Scout is a high yielding AH mid season line. Maturity is similar to Gladius and Catalina which offers security in tough seasons while maintaining high yield potential in good seasons. Scout has medium to long coleoptiles allowing deeper planting with good early seedling vigour. Moderately Resistant (MR) to lodging and very good shattering resistance. Scout commonly delivers higher test weights than most other varieties and has shown to have similar grain size and screenings to establised varieties like Yitpi. Scout has useful levels of sprouting tolerance (being similar to Yitpi) and is considered susceptible to Black Point. Scout offers effective Adult Plant Resistance (APR) to all current stripe rust pathotypes (MS) which ensures rust progession is slowed. The APR in Scout has been demonstrated to protect yield under severe Stripe Rust pressure without the use of fungicides when compared to Wyalkatchem and Mace. Table 2.
