2 AGRICULTURAL MATERIALS HANDLI G SYSTEMS AND EQUIPME T TECHNOLOGY What is the Agricultural Materials Handling Systems and Equipment Technology? What does an Agricultural Materials Handling Technician do? This program involves the planning, construc tion, installation, operation, and maintenance of systems and equipment for the production, torage, processing, and movement of agri cultural materials. Technicians in this area construct and install the hardware used in agricultural materi'als handling systems. These technicians also make repairs, provide preventive mainten ance, and operate equipment. What is meant by agricultural materials? Agricultural materials include feed, fertilizer, s ed, grain, forage, fruits, and vegetables. What technical skills are required for employment? Materials Handling technicians need mechanical skills in the area of welding and metal working, wood and concrete construc tion, electricity, ventilation, plumbing, hy draulics and pneumatics. An understanding of the basic biological and chemical concepts of agricultural ma terials is required. In addition, these techni cians must be able to apply management and engineering technology skills to the design, analysis and operation of ag ic ltu a] ma terials handling systems and equipment. Training in business management, sales and accounting, as applied to those companies involved in agricultural materials handling operations, is also necessary. This curriculum is designed to provide its graduates with a broad base of technical skill required for a successful car r n this exciting and challenging part of the ag ricultural industry.
