Environmental Concerns in Africa EQ: HOW HAS AFRICA DEALT WITH THE MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES OF POLLUTION, DEFORESTATION, AND DESERTIFICATION?

Environmental Concerns Foldable You have a 3-flap foldable with these labels: 1. Pollution 2. Deforestation 3. Desertification Outside: Write the definition and draw a quick, colorful sketch of each environmental concern. Inside: Write the causes, effects, and solutions for each environmental concern.

OUTSIDE: Definition COLORFUL sketch/drawing of each environmental concern.

INSIDE: Causes Effects Solutions

POLLUTION Definition: Occurs when humanmade products or waste negatively alters the natural environment.

Trash left in an open field, harmful chemicals released into the air by a factory, and industrial waste flowing into a natural water supply are all forms of pollution.

Causes Nile River (Egypt): Used for water, transportation, & hydroelectricity: 1. Overpopulation 2. Industrial Waste 3. Chemical Fertilizers Aswan High Dam as an irrigation system has caused farmers to use chemical fertilizers.

Causes Niger River (Sahel Region): Used for transportation & Oil Delta : 1. Petroleum production

Causes Congo River (Rainforest): Used for water, transportation, & fishing: 1. Heavily traveled 2. Human & Industrial Waste

Effects Water Wars Nile River: Ethiopia, Sudan, & Egypt. Growing populations & growing water needs. The Niger River supplies the dry Sahel area before flowing into Nigeria. As more water is used upstream, countries farther down river have less access. Increase in agriculture = greater water needs = less access to water Poor Sanitation Disease/Death

Solutions Clean water programs Fresh underground water wells Ventilation Latrine System to improve basic sanitation. ***Governments ignore because they want their industries to be profitable!***

The Poo Song (Really.)

Pooooo, poooooo. Pooooo This is a song about poo; I know the word is taboo. Don t make a hullabaloo; it s something all of us do.

But if you haven t a loo, then it s a problem for you. Which is why we have to do this song about poo.

Talk about an education, we know all about hygiene. No more squatting by the roadside, you have to dig a VIP latrine.

A Ventilation ImProvement, that s the type we require. With a plastic pipe to catch the flies in a bowl of ash from the fire.

Dad, we don t live in a zoo; you can t just doodoodoodoo. Hey Dad, we re talking to you, and the other dads, too.

Nobody will come to our house; all the kids will shout and weep: My Dad s cleaner than your dad! Cause we haven t got a VIP.

Daddy, we re now talking dirty; we agree and so does Mom. You should build a latrine And we ll all be so clean and It will stop the pain in your bum. OOOH!!

That was our song about poo; it s over, finished and through. It s time to bid it adieu. But if we made a CD. In a week it would be..

Number TWOoooooooo! Phew!

DEFORESTATION Definition: the process of forests being destroyed for human development.

Causes: 1. Commercial Logging for $$$ 2. Agriculture 3. Fuel/Firewood 4. Buildings/Shelter 5. War 6. Mining

Effects: 1. Desertification 2. Infertile Soil 3. Famine/Conflict 4. Loss of Habitats 5. Flooding/Mudslides 6. Climate Change 7. Soil Erosion

Famine/Conflict

Flooding/Mudslides

Soil Erosion

Environmental Effects: Less trees = less oxygen. Meanwhile, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air increases. Less rainforests = fewer medicines. About one-fourth of all medicines people use come from rainforest plants.

Solutions: 1. Replanting Programs 2. Alternative Fuels 3. National Parks 4. Government Regulations

DESERTIFICATION Definition: the spreading of desertlike conditions into areas that were once farmlands.

Causes: 1. Overgrazing 2. Over farming/ CHEMICAL FERTILIZERS overused soil becomes poor & powdery 3. Deforestation 4. Drought 5. Soil Erosion

Environmental superheroes

Imagine... You are a superhero with ONE special power. What is your superhero name and what amazing power do you possess?

We have just learned about the horrible things that are happening to Africa s environment water pollution on the Nile, Niger, and Congo rivers, deforestation of the Congo River Basin Rainforest, and desertification in the Sahel. It is your mission to use your special superhero power to defeat ONE of these environmental problems affecting Africa. Use your power for good before it s too late!

How are you going to use your amazing superhero power to solve one of the devastating problems affecting the African continent? The world wants to know!

The challenge is yours...

1. You are to create a DESCRIPTIVE story that shows how your superhero used their ONE amazing super power for good to defeat ONE of the environmental concerns in Africa. 2. You will need to put your final product on the paper I have provided you. You may use mixed media, markers, crayons, magazine pictures, etc. 3. Your story MUST include the following: A title Your superhero s name and ONE awesome super power A description of one of Africa s environmental concerns, its causes, and its effects. A description of how your superhero will use their super power for good to solve the environmental issue. A COLORFUL illustration of your superhero, their super power, AND the environmental concern they are working to solve.
