2 Overview As we all know the era of 'abundance' is over; this is the period of consequences and to find solutions. Decades have passed addressing problems and making plans for a sustainable future, now is the time for the global community whether it is the government, civil society or the business sector to showcase their efforts in addressing sustainable concerns. In 2006, the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development launched the Sustainability Summit to build a connection between the global communities on issues which accelerate the change towards a sustainable future. The theme for Sustainability Summit 2012 is Sustainable & Inclusive Solution : Summit & Exhibition which aims to: Present sustainability solutions and best practices Sharing of experiences, success stories and exchange ideas Build networks and enhance the learning experience Gunter Pauli Founder, Zero Emissions Research & Initiatives If you want to be exposed to the latest trends, challenges and opportunities then join the CII Sustainability Summit. I enjoyed it and learned a lot.

3 Summit & Exhibition The Summit continues the legacy of bringing thought provoking leaders into action through a process of sharing their achievement and strategizing for the new challenges ahead. The two day Summit will have a few break out sessions which will be interactive and allow participants to share and discuss a particular topic. It will feature distinguished speakers and sustainability leaders from around the globe. Several thought-and-action leaders, senior Ministers and Members of Parliament, key bureaucrats, best minds of Indian industry and MNCs will also be an integral part of the event. The Exhibition aims to cater to the partners and participants and provides them with ample space to demonstrate the miracles of technology, the role models for sustainable and inclusive solution. The exhibitors are experts from industry, civil society, Central & State Governments, NGOs, social entrepreneurs, institutions from India and other parts of the world. The journey of Sustainability Summit has been remarkable, and I am honored to have met and shared with so many distinguished sustainability leaders at this platform. Today, we need a new Sustainable Development paradigm and it is good to see the CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development working on it.

4 Focal Areas INNOVATION FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW Dennis Pamlin Entrepreneur & Founder, 21st Century Frontiers Director, Low Carbon Leaders Project - UN Global Compact Senior Associate, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences & Independent Consultant The Summit has over the years been one of the few events in the world that manage to bring together emerging issues and allowed for one of the best networking opportunities on the planet. Innovation is the key to meet the challenges of sustainability. While developing innovative solutions, it should benefit all economic classes of the society, even the most vulnerable ones. The session starts with a plenary on how the business communities and government foster innovation that leads to green technologies thus creating sustainable livelihoods. 3 parallel breakout sessions will follow: Biotechnology for Sustainability - how the modification of genes is providing solutions in a wide range of areas like medicine, industry, agriculture, etc. to reduce poverty, improve health, environment, and livelihood. Sustainable and Inclusive Innovations - how innovative and efficient technology helps to harness resources as well reach out to the poor. Value Co-creation - how sustainable manufacturing practices be created collectively by producer and the consumer keeping in mind the environmental and social implications increasing its value to all. ICT FOR SUSTAINABILITY Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) has now become a sustainable business as it saves energy and material resources through electronic delivery of services. The session will emphasise on how this industry has become a leader in enabling business and society to move towards sustainability. Marcel Engel Managing Director Regional Network & Development Focus Area WBCSD The Summit provides an excellent platform for interaction among Indian and foreign corporate leaders, high-level officials from government and international agencies, and civil society representatives. It supports our common quest to find solutions for a more inclusive and sustainable future. NEXT GENERATION INFRASTRUCTURE The importance of infrastructure for sustained economic and social development is well recognised. New strategies have been developed to make public work smarter that can support the metabolism of urbanisation, pollution and climate change. The session will discuss the new paradigms of multipurpose infrastructure integrated into natural and social systems. RESURGENT PSUs: LEADING INDIA'S GROWTH Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in India have played a significant role in shaping the path of the country's economic development. Intense competition has made it mandatory for Indian PSUs to cut costs, reduce energy wastage and improve operational efficiency. This session explores efficacy of PSUs in acquiring newer and greener technologies, adopting energy saving processes and driving economic growth.

5 Focal Areas SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE & FOOD SECURITY With the increase in urban sprawl, the world needs a new vision in the field of agriculture so that it can ensure food security for the marginal communities, environmental sustainability and economic opportunity. The panel in this session aims to discuss the initiatives undertaken for the development of a sustainable agricultural system both in case of production and markets, ensuring food security for all. SUSTAINABILITY IN INDIAN STATES Balancing growth and natural resource use is a daunting question faced by states in India today. The challenge for Indian states is rapid economic growth, social equity and inclusion, and environmental sustainability. The States and the Central Government will need to work together to face this challenge. During the deliberations, it is anticipated that the participating states will present their road map for sustainable growth and the challenges ahead. VALUE CREATION WITH GOOD CORPORATE GOVERNANCE Good corporate governance incorporates the connection between sustaining the planet as well as sustaining the business enterprise by creating values and balancing the long and short term goals for the stakeholders. The plenary will focus on the challenges of companies in shaping long-term sustainable development strategies. 3 breakout sessions will follow which will explore topics like Integrated Reporting - how integrated reporting helps companies to build a linkage between the organisation's strategy and governance and environmental, social and economic performances. Sustainability Rating - how companies positioned themselves in delivering sustainable value for the future. Stakeholder Engagement - how stakeholders engagement help a company to embed sustainability through innovation and co-creation into their decision making process

7 Government is acutely conscious of its responsibility towards combating climate change, future of humankind and the moral commitments for its people. It is imperative for the society to take along the stakeholders in a democratic way towards growth. (2009) National Solar Mission aiming at 20 GW solar capacities by India has achieved 15,500 MW of grid interactive installed renewable power, which is around 8% of the total installed grid capacity of the country. 8 / THE ORGANISER / The CII-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development is an institution that creates a conducive, enabling climate for Indian businesses to pursue sustainability goals. It creates awareness, promotes thought leadership, and builds capacity to achieve sustainability across a broad spectrum of issues. The Centre is the fountainhead of ideas and practices to promote sustainabilty. It enables Indian businesses to become sustainable, and channels the potential of Indian industry to power India's agenda for inclusive growth and sustainable development. It enables businesses to transform themselves by embedding the concerns of sustainable development into their own strategies and processes. The Centre recognises businesses that make outstanding contributions to sustainable development. In the process, they become role models for India's corporations in adopting cutting edge practices to promote sustainable development.
