2 What is Food Crisis = Food Insecurity FAO (1996) : Food security exists when all people, at all times, have physical economic access to sufficient, safe nutritious food to meet their dietary needs food preferences for an active healthy life. Anything less than food security is food insecurity Food Security Aspects Their Indicators Food availability Accessibility Consumption sufficiency Quantity Quality Nutrition adequacy Safety Physical, economic social accessibility Compliance to preferences Compliance to food habit culture Compliance to belief religion Intake sufficiency Quality of household food processing Quality of household sanitation hygiene Quality of water Quality of child care Stability/ sustainability of food availability/ supply, accessibility consumption 2

3 Food Security Indicators - INDONESIA CBS (BPS No. 38/07/Th. X, 2 Juli 2007) Number of people under poverty line = 37,17 mio (16,58 % of population). Poverty line : earning of < IDR per cap pper month IDR for food + IDR for nonfood. 3 x total poor population vurnarable for micronutritien deficiency Prevalence of Iron deficiency : 50.4% (SKRT 1995). Malnutrition Micronutrient deficiency may cause : Reduced cognitive potential Increased maternal morbility Reduced nutritional status of newborn babies Reduced productivity Food Security Indicators - INDONESIA The poor is the most vurnerable ( what is indicators of poor is essential) Most of most vurnerable children (under five; or under two years old) pregnant women) Need intervention scheme for rescue preventing the lost of generation 3
