SMASH Making Work Easier Adding value through technology presented by Alastair Neville

Today s brief presentation will go through Background Tech Tools used Vision Farm management Feed management Human resources & operational management

Background 29 year-old herd-owning sharemilker, third generation on the family dairy farm in Reporoa (South of Rotorua, North of Taupo) Born and bred farmer, grew up watching the way my father and grandfather farmed Studied at Massey University Bachelor Agri-science Returned back to the home farm to begin my career and add value to the family business Involved with various industry organisations NZYF, Federated Farmers, Tbfree/NAIT, Fonterra Get beyond your own front gate Keen on capturing opportunities to further improve our family business through the use of technology

Farm Management Tools Guidance and Tracking of Nutrient use and cropping management: Tracmap Precision Farming Benefits gained from these: Less chance of operator error or miscommunication Have live records, monitor and track where inputs have been placed. More efficient use of product by reducing wastage (e.g. overlap)

Tracmap On-farm jobs with own gear spraying, drilling Organising contractors e.g. fertiliser spreading

Precision Farming Whey order and nutrient reports

Feed Management Grazing Calculator app Keenan ikeenan/pace software Benefits gained from using these Grazing Calculator is a simple feed budgeting tool that staff can easily use on the ground Keenan DTM cloud based feed ration software Ideal for monitoring supplementary feeds used in the Keenan mixer wagon. Loading information is then used for providing margin analysis of feed costs over production and loading accuracy.

Keenan Mixer wagon with DTM Feed management software

Gather and process feedout data Analyse loading accuracy Are operators under or overloading?

Margin analysis on production vs feed cost Using feedout data from the DTM software and weighbox we can get an indication of what our margin is on feed costs Can use the information to influence production management decisions e.g. tail end of lactation where decreased production may no longer offset feed costs. Below is a benchmark report that can be generated between the user and Keenan InTouch nutritionist

Human Resource and Operational management

What attracted me to JOBDONE? The fact it is a management program designed by a farmer for farmers Nigel Taylor

Customise the program to your needs My first use of it was for recording when staff are on and off the farm and H&S Sign In/Out Safety Check Staff, contractors & visitors can sign in and be briefed with safety information. See who is on farm at any time and ensure they have left safely when expected Keeps a record of who s signed in and out which you can then create a timesheet summary for use in payroll systems Incorporate farm/business Health and Safety policies and procedures and have a live hazard register

Record hazards as you come across them

Farm Notice Board Keep everyone up to speed with what's happening on farm

Put as much information into it as you want and build it to your specification For example below with the ground spreading notice, I have put all relevant information on board to minimise any confusion between contractors and people on farm. I have also attached a link to the job map so staff can have access to it to find which paddocks need to be done via their smartphone (alternative to leaving a paper map behind)

Job planning, scheduling and analysis JOBDONE has pre-built and customisable job templates that can be assigned to staff Can be simple or detailed with step-by-step instructions for specific jobs Can attach photos to provide visual aids Can attach pdf files, such as service manuals

Why have I invested in technology? The key reasons why I have invested in these tools: Create valuable information to further enhance management decisions Save time and resources Be able to create better transparency for everyone involved with the business

Vision I have for the industry with regards to the use of technology? The farmers of today are different from the farmers of previous generations and we will be different to the farmers of tomorrow Farming is becoming more scrutinised than ever before therefore we need to be more transparent in what we do Increasing amount of consumers wanting to know more about the origins of their food - traceability and proof of environmental footprint The smartphone is now as common as your car keys and wallet and every year there are more tools becoming available. Use them to your advantage We are spending more time up in the cloud

The beauty of technology I wonder if Dad or Grandad ever coded transactions from the paddock????
