Jan Köbbing Growing media Sphagnum moss September 2016 Growing media Sphagnum moss Multiple reasons lead to a search for alternative growing media constituents Decline in available peat extraction sites in Western and Central Europe Rising public awareness about peatland conversion and greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands 7

Jan Köbbing Growing media Sphagnum moss September 2016 Growing media Sphagnum moss For most growing media constituent peat is the benchmark as it has outstanding physical, chemical, biological and economical properties: Low ph-value, allowing easy ph adjustment Low nutrients content, enabling easy adjustment of plant nutrients High water capacity and high air capacity Good structure stability Low microbial activity Free from human and plant pathogens, pollutants and heavy metals peatmoss is the main peat-forming plant in ombrotrophic mires 8

Jan Köbbing Growing media Sphagnum moss September 2016 Growing media Sphagnum moss Industrialized plant production today 9

Jan Köbbing Cultivation of Sphagnum mosses September 2016 Cultivation of Sphagnum mosses Cultivation of hummock peatmosses (Sphagnum species), harvesting and processing to obtain a growing media constituent Establishment of two 5 ha large test sides following peat depletion. Residual peat layer of strongly decomposed peat Cultivation of S. palustre, S. papillsosum, S. magellanicum, so far. Sphagnum russowii, S. nemoreum, S. quinquefarium, S. rubellum, and S. centrale in autumn Investigations on animals, plants and greenhouse gas emissions by the University of Hannover (Dr. Martha Graf) and the Thünen-Institute Braunschweig (Dr. Bärbel Tiemeyer) Co-Funded by the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Lower-Saxony and the German Foundation Environment (DBU) 10

Jan Köbbing Cultivation of Sphagnum mosses September 2016 Cultivation of Sphagnum mosses Harvesting 11

Jan Köbbing Cultivation of Sphagnum mosses September 2016 Cultivation of Sphagnum mosses Spreading 12

Jan Köbbing Cultivation of Sphagnum mosses September 2016 Cultivation of Sphagnum mosses Covering 13

Jan Köbbing Opportunities September 2016 Opportunities of utilizing Sphagnum mosses as a growing media constituent 1. Sustainable regional development; 2. Another growing media constituent; 3. aong-term perspective for the growing media industry; 4. jobs in economically weaker regions; 5. colonisation of former peat extraction areas with Sphagnum; 6. initiate enhancement of the ecological value of agricultural land; 7. mitigate greenhouse gas emissions. 14

Jan Köbbing Challenges September 2016 Challenges of utilizing Sphagnum mosses as a growing media constituent 1. Shortage of sites 2. Hydro-Management 3. Inoculation material (peat moss) 4. Weeds and fungi management 5. Selection of Sphagnum-Species 6. Profitability 15

Fazit Conclusion Sphagnum farming can potentially contribute to deliver alternative growing media constituent It is the only climate-friendly bog cultivation It brings backs typical bog plants and animals But policy support is needed

Jan Köbbing IPS Peat Moss Harvesting and Growing September 2016 IPS Project: Peat Moos Harvesting and Growing for Horticulture and Restoration IPS Strategic Plan : a stronger project approach After-use concept Sphagnum mosses grow for restoration and as substitute for peat in growing media IPS wants to establish a network focusing on: Production of a renewable, high quality growing media constituent Sustainable and climate-smart after-use of peat extraction sites Protection of pristine mires and restoration of degraded bog Potential increase of biodiversity, in particular in Europe Maintenance of infrastructure and employment options in economically weak rural areas Mitigation or even sequestration of greenhouse gases 17

Jan Köbbing IPS Peat Moss Harvesting and Growing September 2016 IPS Project: Peat Moos Harvesting and Growing for Horticulture and Restoration Funding a network via European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST, COST funds: meetings, workshops, conferences, training schools, short-scientific-missions and common publications Submitting an proposal to the end of the year! So far we have: 25 experts from Canada, Ireland, Germany, Japan, Chile, Poland, Ireland, Finland, UK, Sweden and Lithuania (Aukstumala). 21 Sphagnum-Projects But we also need YOU!
