Soybean Market Development for General Public

Joint Effort to Improve Health Status of All Afghans: Partnerships with Government of Afghanistan The Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has endorsed soy nutrition initiative as most economical and practical solution to protein-energy malnutrition.

Women s Empowerment Programs Soy Farmers Village Women s Home Poultry Program Nutrition & Food Preparation Seminars Women-headed households are almost 50 percent more likely to be severely food insecure than other households in Afghanistan, and are also twice as likely to use emergency coping strategies, such as begging. 37

Soy Farmer Training Program Every year, several hundred women farmers receive training and agriculture inputs necessary to become successful soy farmers. Demonstration Field Day training for women soy farmers. 38

Home Poultry Program: Empowering Women to Start their Own Business and Livelihood Improvement NEI is teaching 100 women to build their own poultry coops and raise poultry for egg production. The farmers receive hens and materials to sustain their own poultry business. The chickens and eggs are sold to improve livelihood and also used for home consumption as a source of protein.

Raising Awareness of Soy Nutrition NEI conducts workshops for women in villages and urban areas on the benefits of soy nutrition

Challenges Production challenges Poor Security Lack of water catchment and irrigation infrastructure Lack of mechanized farming reduces productivity Lack of grain elevators No infrastructure to buy, store, and sell Processor should procure whole year s requirement of soybeans Consumer market development Awareness of health benefits of soybean

Soybean Production in 20,000 out of 33,000 Villages 85% Household Penetration Soybean Production: 300,000 tons/year
