2 MGNREGA EXPLORES GOLDMINE FOR CHAKDANA VILLAGE OR MGNREGA MAKES GRAM PANCHAYAT INDEPENDENT FOR DEVELOPMENT WORKS TO BE EXECUTED IN VILLAGE CHAKDANA SUCCESS STORY Villagers of Chakdana village in SBS, Nagar distt. had never thought that the gram panchayat land which they were observing Barron from their childhood will produce gold one day. The team of the officials of department of Soil and Water Conservation and Gram Panchayat, members of village Chakdana under the dynamic leadership of district administration SBS, Nagar makes it true by developing the wasteland into a good fertile land under MGNREGA and changed the scenario of the area. Stating this Sarpanch Gram Panchayat village Chakdana S. Manjit Singh told that 27.5 acres barron land was situated at Village Chakdana under the ownership of Gram Panchayat. Land was undulated and so many small pits were there. The pores of soil was closed and due to this water retention capacity of the soil was decreased. Due to low infiltration rate, rain water stands for long time in the land and pits. Neither this land was producing any crop nor giving any other income whereas, the nearby fertile land which given on lease by the local farmers at high rate approximately Rs. 20,000/- per acre per year. So with hope in mind, Gram Panchayat members made contact with the officers of Soil and Water Conservation Department. After inspection and gone through the problems by the group of officials, department recommended that this land should be leveled with the help of labour, to increase the water retention capacity, field bunding should be done and to overcome the problem of salinity, Gypsum should added. To store additional rain water two dug out ponds were recommended and to provide irrigation facilities to the land, R.C.C under ground pipe line was recommended.

3 An estimate of approximately Rs Lacs was prepared by the department for completion of recommended tasks. The distt. Administration released funds against the estimate and total expenditure of this project is 9.77 Lacs, from which Rs Lacs was spent on labour components and Rs Lacs was spent on material components as per the guidelines of MGNREGA. 35 families were given employment on this project and Rs Lacs paid to labour against 4659 number of mandays. The general category labour was paid against 1681 no. mandays, scheduled caste category labour was paid against 2978 no. mandays and employment against 2680 mandays was paid to women labour. The field bunding was done and gypsum of Rs Lacs was mixed in the land. Rs Lacs was spent for laying of 400 meters under ground pipe line system in ha area to provide better irrigation facilities. For storing excess rain water, two dug out ponds in one acre area each was completed. Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar, Dr. Jasbir Singh told that the successful completion of this project is made possible only by the valuable and appreciable efforts and hardly co-operation by the gram panchayat and villagers and staff of the BDPO office Aur. Er. Krishan Duggal Soil Conservation Officer, Nawanshahr / Aur told that an income of Rs Lacs per annum had been started to gram panchayat and it will increase during the coming years. He also told that gram panchayat has also planned to put two dug out ponds on lease for fish farming which will give an additional income of Rs Lac per annum to panchayat. Sarpanch Gram Panchayat village Chakdana S. Manjit Singh told that during auction of land, there was a race among the farmers to take this land on lease. But Gram Panchayat decided to auction this land on very low rate i.e. Rs. 4000/- per acre per year as the land was less fertile and it was expected a good fertile land during the coming years. Sarpanch told that Action Plan from the

4 income of the land for step wise development of village Chakdana like cement concrete in village streets, construction of stadium, cleaning of drains, upgradation of village primary health centre and civil veterinary dispensaries etc. has been prepared and would be implemented during coming years to develop the Chakdana as a model village in District. 5 From table, it is clear that the project cost has been recovered so far by panchayat and beneficiaries. Panchayat had got Rs Lacs from lease and farmers had sold crops amounting to Rs. 18 Lacs. The gram panchayat had also made payment of approximately Rs.1.00 Lacs to Punjab State Power Corporation for getting tubewell electricity connection from the income received from lease. Sarpanch Manjit Singh told that the gram panchayat village Chakdana had established a permanent asset of income for the villagers and coming generations which will add a great contribution in the development of village in future.
