Fruit Tree Production in Sudan By Badereldin E. M. Elhassan - (PhD)

Introduction

LOCATION: it is a heart of africa. Area:2.5 million kilometers square before jully 2011, 1.88 million kilometers square. population: 40 millions before jully millions. Natural Resources: water, petroluem, mines.

Mango in Nile River State

Present Status More than 35 varities are available. Area under cultivation is Hectare. Total annual production: tons. Main production seasons all year round, except September-October Season of export is from December to August.

Banana in Kassala State

Present status In Sudan, banana is produced commercially in small and medium-scattered orchards along the River Nile and its tributaries banks and in large plantations at Kassala. The water resources are the Blue Nile River and in an aquifer system in the alluvial deposits of the Gash River. The cultivar Dwarf Cavendish covers most (95%) of the plantation area. A number of other cultivars have been introduced at different times including Grand Nain and Williams Selections. However, these improved varieties have shown that these can be grown and adopted by farmers successfully and provide a starting point for expansion ha. produces about tons annually have been noted. The crop has the opportunity to be exported to the neighboring Arab States and Middle East. Season of export extending from October to June.

Grapefruit in Gezira State

Present Status The history of planting Citrus in the Sudan was dated back to 1896 according to Mr. Wingate s report on Dongla province. Citrus planting is known to be disseminated in the States of the North, Nile River, Khartoum, Kassala, Gazira, Blue Nile, Kordofan and Darfur. It would be recommended that to plant the highly demanded varieties of lime and grapefruit followed by oranges, mandarin and then Pummelo. More than hectare are planted with citrus trees. Mean production season is from October to March except for lime which produces all year round.

Guava in Sinnar State

Present Status In the Sudan Guava is grown successfully in the areas of Singa, Kassala, Abujebaeha, Rahad, Nile River and Jailli in Khartoum state. No authentic statistic information on areas and production amounts are available. Six thousand hectare produces tons annually are noted. There are four clones of guava namely: Shendi (white pulp), Pakistani (white pulp), Gunib (red pulp) and Singa (white pulp). Production per hectare area is estimated to be around tons annually..

Papaya in Blue Nile State

Present status: Information Data concerning papaya production in Sudan is lacking, and even not authentic. Its well known that, Papaya is grown in different regions of the Sudan, on a limited scale for local consumption (subsistence and backyard).. Plant growth, production per tree, fruit size and its quality are very satisfactory.

Pineapple in nursery (Khartoum)

Present Status Promising Crop : pineapple could be grown commercially in Equatorial zone, and some parts of the Flood Plains as well as Gebel Marra, Gisan, Kurmuk, Nuba Mountains. Currently mixed varieties of pineapple are grown by farmers and NGOs in these places, but on limited scale areas.

Strengthen: Institutional capacity in term of personnel, land, labs and equipments is optimized. Farmers have willingness to adopt new technologies. Fertile soils for planting are available. Irrigation water from different resources is available. Productivity is commercialized. Production areas are not far from the national sea ports.

Weakness: Lack of supportive policies for improving the value chain. Under investment in the fruit tree production. Weakness of institutional support. Limited dissemination of information and technologies. Lack of germplasm exchange. Insufficient Funding.. Lack of appropriate skill and knowledge for fruit production. Inadequate research and extension services. Different players do not working together.

Opportunities: Amendment of national production enhancement policy. Improvement of infrastructure. Enhances quality standards by using improved cultivars. Create alliances between research, extensions and farmers. Fruit tree gains new technical knowledge and skills.. Improvement of value chain. Establishment of sustainable market information system.

Suggestions to International Tropical Fruits Network : 1- To have gene bank for all cultivars of tropical fruits. 2- To have a workshop for fruit flies hosting in Sudan next year.
