Local barns are beginning to fill up with tobacco, grain crops are quickly drying down, and cattle producers are beginning to think about weaning the spring calf crop and preparing for the fall crop. In this newsletter you will find a couple of articles to assist with agriculture production as well as several local and regional upcoming meeting dates. Some local services are also highlighted such as the waste tire clean-up and soil testing program. Also, it is a busy time of year for our active Cattlemen s Association. (See inside this letter for details about the upcoming forage testing program, and fall tour they will be sponsoring.) As always, if you have questions about anything you see in this newsletter, give us a call at ! Sincerely, Clay Stamm County Extension Agent for Agriculture & Natural Resources A Clark County Forage Testing Week has been scheduled for October 1-5, Current Clark County Cattlemen members will receive five free hay tests during this time. If you are not a Cattlemen member, each test will be $10. Any type of harvested forage, other than corn silage, can be tested. Clay can come out to your farm and collect samples during this time, or you can check out the Extension Office hay probe and take your own samples. Samples and payment will be mailed out on the afternoon of October 5th, so make your reservation early! Call the Extension Office at , if you have any other questions or to sign-up. This is a great program to take advantage of to build a ration for your herd or to just see the facts on what kind of forages you are feeding your cattle!

2 Page 2 Cattle producers, don t forget about the CPH-45 feeder calf sale program. It provides benefits to your operations, your profits, and the beef cattle industry as a whole. See the requirements and sale dates below, and if you have any additional questions about the program, feel free to contact the Clark County Cooperative Extension Office or visit this website: 1. Owned by seller a minimum of 60 days. 2. Weaned a minimum of 45 days. 3. Trained to eat feed from a bunk and drink water from a trough. (Do not overfeed; fleshy calves should be avoided and are likely to be discounted). 4. Dehorned and healed (no visible horns or scurs). 5. Males castrated and healed (knife castration is strongly recommended). Late castrated calves may lead to stags, which are discounted. The scrotal sac with testicles must have fallen off banded calves. 6. Treated for grubs and lice according to label recommendations for time of year. 7. Dewormed with an endectocide a maximum of 60 days before the sale. 8. Vaccinated for Clostridia (7-way) subcutaneously in the neck. 9. Vaccinated and boostered for IBR, PI3, BVD, and BRSV (booster injection for viral diseases must be modified live vaccine). 10. Vaccinated for Manheimia haemolytica (pasteurella). Note: All vaccines are boosters must be administered no more than 90 days and at least 14 days prior to sale. 11. All processing recorded on body map and chart on CPH certificate. 12. Identified with official Kentucky CPH tag. 13. Heifers are guaranteed open at time of sale and steers are guaranteed not to be bulls. Seller agrees to reimburse buyer $ for pregnant heifers or intact bulls. All claims must be properly verified by a veterinarian within four (4) months of sale. 14. Calves must have access to a free choice mineral supplement which contains a minimum 1,400 ppm copper (no copper oxide), 26 ppm selenium, 3,000 ppm zinc, 3,000 ppm manganese and 18-25% salt based on a 4 oz. daily intake. No other salt available. They represent your farm and the Kentucky beef industry at the next level. There are lots of reasons to do it, but let me just say that it is becoming the industry standard and it s the right thing to do! Support your nearest CPH-45 feeder calf sale!

See full details and register online at the Forage website: forages.ca.uky.edu/event Remember, fall is a great time to soil sample pastures, hay fields, and crop fields. There is typically a quicker turnaround time on fall results than samples submitted during the spring rush. Fall is a great time to apply Ag lime and certain fertilizers to fields as well. The Clark County Cooperative Extension Office offers free soil testing year round, feel free to stop in and pick-up soil bags and check out a soil probe to utilize during sampling.

4 Page 4 Successful livestock production depends on high quality, high yielding forages. Establishment of a good stand is a first and important step in a successful forage program. Several steps that are of vital importance for establishment and maintenance include: 1) Match plant to soils and to intended use. 2) Select high quality seed of an adapted variety. 3) Supply proper fertility. 4) Prepare seedbed and inoculate legume seed. 5) Use proven seeding methods. 6) Seed at the right time with the correct amount of seed. There will be a waste tire clean-up for Clark County residents on October 4th, 5th, and 6th. Waste tires can be brought to the State Department of Highways Garage during normal business hours on these days.
